Dreams.

They are part of life. They give us hopes, determination, willing. They can make us strong, they give us goals. They can give us meaning.

They can be crushed, too. Those who believe dreams are a lie can dissmiss them, push the believers aside. They may not know it, but there are dreams. Not just this illusion that we get while asleep, or a meager want for something. Real, serious dreams shape a part of us.

And dreams come true.
As the morning sun slipped through the blinds in my window and onto my face, my eyes cracked open. I knew the morning was here. I yawned, still drowsy, and slowly sat up. After a few seconds, I realized that today, I was going to finally meet Pallet Town's Professor Oak, and not to mention get my very first Pokémon.

The excitement hit me then, and I flung up my covers and leapt out of my bed, then hurriedly changed into my clothes, which I had laid out ready the night before. I looked around my room, grabbed my bag, also previously packed, and shot down the stairs.

My parents were there already, as were my brother and sister, eating breakfast. "Good morning, Kyle," my mother smiled as I hurried in. "Did you sleep well?"

My kitchen is quite wide, and connected to the dinner room and sitting room by large, glass doors. There are also numerous glass windows which make up for the wall that lead to the garden, which my mom is very proud of. A nice enough kitchen, if I do say so myself.

"Yes, but it took a while to get to sleep, knowing what day it was today," I replied, sitting at the table next to my brother, who's name is Robert. While I'm only 13, he's nearly 18, and a really fantastic Pokémon Trainer. Me and my sister, Melanie, who's 11 now, see him as a great inspiration.

I grabbed some toast and a plate, eager to finish my breakfast quickly so that I could leave for the Professor's Lab. My sister asked, "So, Kyle, have you decided? Which Pokémon will you take?"

I actually hadn't thought about this, and after swallowing a large mouthful of buttered toast I replied, "No, I haven't. I probably won't pick Charmander, as I don't want to copy Robert. But the choice between a Bulbasaur or a Squirtle is difficult."

Robert grinned. "Pick Bulbasaur. Besides Charmander, it's the best of them." My brother doesn't usually grin so easily, unless it's a special ocassion or something. But I still asked, "Why do you really want me to choose Bulbasaur?"

"Because then I'll have the advantage over you!" Robert chuckled, then stood up and made for the door. "Well, I've got to go. These tournament's don't wait forever, even if the best of the contestants isn't there. See ya, and good luck!" And with that, he walked out of the house.

Soon after, I finished my breakfast as well, and after saying my goodbyes and getting my bag again, I left the house and started up the road towards Oak Labratories. There, the Professor would be waiting to give the three children he had chosen there starter Pokémon. I could hardly wait.

"Hey! Kyle!" called a familiar voice. I turned to see David, a friend of mine, rushing towards me at high speed. When he slowed to a stroll, panting, he asked, "So, you're going to the lab as well? If you're thinking about taking Charmander like your brother, forget it! That Pokémon is mine."

David is also 13, and strong for his age, too. He has light brown hair which he likes to keep long, blue eyes, and good teeth. We've known each other since we were both 5.

"Don't worry, you can have it, as long as the third kid's ok with it," I answered. "But I still have to decide which one I'll take." We continued along the path in silence, both deep in thought. Finally, the lab came into view. "There it is!" declared David, and hurried forwards.

I followed, and when we got closer, we could see a figure waiting outside the lab. She had long, blonde hair that she kept organized under a red hat, and she looked like the third one who would be getting their Pokémon today.

"Er, hello!" said David when we arrived at the gate. "Are you Sarah, by chance?" Now that I thought about it, my parents had been saying something about some new people to the town, and that they had a daughter.

The girl nodded before replying, "And you two are David and Kyle, right?" She seemed to know us already. We both answered with a nod, and I was just about to ask her which Pokémon she was going to take when the doors swung open and an elderly man smiled out at us. He had brown hair, and he wore a plain brown shirt and trousers under a white labcoat. "Hello! You are here to receive Pokémon, yes?" said Professor Oak.

"Yes!" crowed David, and hurried towards the door. I rolled my eyes and ran after him, and Sarah giggled, then followed. "If you will just step inside, I'll try to make this quick. I'm sure you are eager to get your Pokémon, no?" smiled Oak, and gestured into his lab.

We filed inside, and he led us in a straight line towards what I guessed would be the center of the lab. The room was extremely large, and it was full of strange looking machines and scientists were busily scurrying around left and right, with only a few stopping to smile at us. There were also numerous doors around the lab, leading into long corridors.

When we arrived at the center, the Professor walked up to a metal table and pressed a glowing, green button. There was a hiss, and the top of the table slid off to reveal three shining, red Pokéballs. "Within these are your Pokémon. Go ahead, take one!"

Under the Pokéballs were the names of the Pokémon inside. David reached out and plucked the Pokéball with "Charmander" under it from the pedestal. "Thank you, Professor!" he beamed, obviously delighted at the thought of his first Pokémon.

Then Sarah stretched out her arm and carefully removed the Pokéball containing Squirtle from the machine. "If it's alright with you...?" she asked. I nodded, and she smiled. I was glad she had gone second. Now I didn't have to choose.

That left me with Bulbasaur. As I took the Pokéball, I remember Robert saying this was the Pokémon I should pick. Your the boss, I thought.

"Well, now that you have your Pokémon, I suggest you get going. A woundrous world awaits you, and you don't want to be missing anything!" chuckled the Professor.

We thanked him, then hurried out of the lab. Only then did the excitement hit us. "Oh, wow!" cheered Sarah. "This is great!"

David punched the air too. "Now, sorry to leave you, guys, but I've gotta go. The world of Pokémon awaits!" He looked at his Pokéball again, smiled, and hurried of.

"Well, I hope to see you sometime, Kyle," Sarah said to me. Then, she took a bike that had been leaning on the wall outside the lab and jumped on. "And good luck!" She cycled off.

I watched her leave, then took out my Pokéball again. Oh yes, I thought. This is going to be fun.
As Sarah and David dissappeared into the distance, the thought of What will I do now? occured to me. I was just about to start in the direction of Route 1 when a voice from the Professor's Laboratory called, "Wait!"

I turned to see one of the assistants hurrying towards me, a brown paper package in his hand. He came to a stop at my side, and after catching his breath, panted, "The Professor-gasp-wanted me to give this to you. He said there was one for each of you, and could you give them out?" He pressed the package into my hands, and ran back into the Lab, as if he was some sort of messenger.

I pulled the paper away to find three small, red machines, which had flaps on hinges, so they were like a book. I opened one up and found a screen. They were covered with buttons on the inside. A note was also in the package. I took it out, unfolded it, and read:

Dear Reader,

If you are reading this, I can be quite certain that you are one of the lucky three to have obtained a Starter Pokémon this year. Congratulations! It's not every day you get to set out on a journey like that.

Now, in return for giving you these Pokémon, I might ask of you a small favour. Within this package are three of my most cherished inventions, the Pokédex. These are complex devices that I hope will be of great assist to you in helping me. As a Pokémon Professor, it is important that I have information on the Pokémon of this region. However, in my old age, I simply cannot get the time (or the will) to travel around all of Kanto seeking out each individual Pokémon and taking notes on each and every one.

That's where you three come in. The Pokédex is a small supercomputer that scans any Pokémon in this region, and gives lots of information on the subject. I have already installed the area of all the Pokémon that locations I know, but this information will only be available to you when you have seen the Pokémon and scanned it with your Pokédex. In this way, while enjoying your quest around Kanto, you can assist me in my studies (and hopefully find some rare Pokémon while your at it!).

I hope you will help me accomplish this task, and enjoy your adventure!

Professor Oak

Pallet Town's Official Pokémon Professor

I folded up the letter and took a final look at the lab. "Will do, Prof," I muttered. "Thanks for the Bulbasaur." I slipped one of the Pokédexes into my trouser pocket, and placed the other two, along with the Professor's letter, into a small pocket in my bag. I continued down the path, wondering how long it would be until I could give the Pokédexes to David and Sarah.

I suddenly realized I hadn't even seen my Bulbasaur yet. I took out it's Pokéball, and tossed it onto the ground. There was a flash of brilliant, white light, and my first ever Pokémon appeared.

She looked like a small dinosaur, with four legs, and a turquoise body dotted with darker blue patches. A leaf-green bulb sat on her back, glistening in the morning sunlight. She opened her eyes and revealed startling scarlet pupils, full of eagerness to explore, to get out and enjoy the world. She saw me, and ran over. I bent down and she leapt up and started giving me a mighty cuddle. It was fantastic! I finally had my very own Pokémon.

I took out the Pokédex and pointed it at her, trying to figure out which button turned it on. Finally, the button on the back made the screen flash to life. A pre-recorded voice spoke: "POKÉDEX ONLINE. POWER WILL NO LONGER DE-ACTIVATE UNLESS BATTERIES ARE REMOVED. INITIATING SYSTEM CHECKUP." Some lights flashed, and it bleeped a few times. Then the voice started again, saying, "SCAN COMPLETE. NO VIRUSES DETECTED. WLCOME TO POKÉDEX." Some options came up on the screen, and I scrolled to the option 'scan'. I pressed ENTER, and pointed it at Bulbasaur, who cocked her head to the side, confused at what the machine was.

A small beam of blue light shot from the machine, and went up and down on my Bulbasaur. "POKÉMON DETECTED. DATA FOR BULBASAUR ADDED TO FILES. PRESS 'FILES' TO READ NEW DATA." the machine said, so I pressed it. Sure enough, a pre-loaded picture of my Bulbasaur appeared on the screen. Beside it, there was an option that read 'General Information', one that read 'Area', one that read 'Cry', etc. I pressed 'General Information', and the screen changed to text. The voice read it out, too. "BULBASAUR ARE GRASS TYPE POKÉMON. THEY ARE USUALLY NOT FOUND IN THE WILD, BUT THERE HAVE BEEN SOME SIGHTINGS IN THE SEVII ISLANDS. BULBASAUR HAVE A LARGE BULB GROWING ON THERE BACKS, WHICH GROW ALONGSIDE BULBASAUR. THESE PROGRESSIVELY BLOOM INTO FLOWERS. BULBASAUR EAT MOST TYPES OF PLANTS, AND THERE BULB ALSO USES PHOTOSYNTHESIS TO DRAIN SOLAR ENERGY. THEY ARE RATHER FRIENDLY, AND SO MAKE GOOD BEGINNER POKÉMON."

I looked at my Bulbasaur, eating flowers from the grass we were standing on. "Well, come on!" I said to her, smiling. "We should get going!" She looked up at me. "Bulba?"

I started walking in the direction of Route 1, and she followed, walking alongside me happily. After about ten metres, she stopped suddenly, and started sniffing around a clump of bushes suspiciously. "What is it?" I asked her, and walked over. I bent down and listened. Now that I was up close, I could hear it; a sort of rustling, like something was moving through the bushes. It sounded like...a rat.

As soon as that thought came to my mind, a dart of purple shot over our heads, and I heard something land behind us. I turned to see a small, rat-like Pokémon eyeing us warily, it's small, square teeth bared.

I took out my Pokédex and pointed it at the Pokémon, then pressed the 'scan' option again. The blue beam danced on the purple rat for a second, then a picture appeared on the screen. "SCAN COMPLETE. DATA FOR RATTATA ADDED TO FILES." I would have to look at that later, because the Rattata didn't look to happy about just being pointed at by a weird machine. "Ra-TTATA!" it shrieked, and lunged forwards. I rolled to the side and managed to stand up. I'd watched enough TV tournaments to realize I had to battle it now.

Bulbasaur bent her back legs, and I called, "Tackle!" It's a very basic move, so I knew my Bulbasaur would know it. She jumped forwards and slammed into the Rattata, knocking it back a few feet. It quickly recovered, however, and growled. It was fast, and caught Bulbasaur by surprise when it lunged forwards again with a Scratch. She managed to dodge, however, and when I called out, "Tackle!" again, she went forward with a relentless assault, knocking the Rattata out. She sat down and started munching on some grass, looking very please with herself.

"Well done!" I said, as I bent down and tickled her. "You were great!"

"Bulbasaur!" she crowed in agreement, and once she finished her grass, we walked own the Route, happy with our first ever battle.
Here, I'll post any Pokémon Kyle has seen.
14uc8ba.png
Bulbasaur are Grass-type Pokémon. They are usually not found in the wild, but there have been some sightings in the Sevii Islands. Bulbasaur have a large bulb growing on their backs, which grows alongside Bulbasaur. These progressively bloom into flowers. Bulbasaur eat most types of plants, and their bulbs also use photosynthesis to drain solar energy. They are rather friendly, and so make good beginner Pokemon.
2hnwajd.png
Rattata are rodent-like Pokémon that can be found almost anywhere in the Kanto Region. They are pests, living in cellars, fields, mines, caves, and anywhere else. This Pokémon can be quite vicious if it gets angry, but fights are quite rare in the wild, seeing as most of the species don't care about each other, unless it is the breeding season. They are very energetic, but not too strong, leaving them with only a small edge in battle.

Sorry about that guys, will fix that. Apparently it doesn't matter how many spaces you put, thought it would come out differently, and I had to go. Will fix that.

EDIT: Fixed. Thanks for your positive comments, Omega.
