Dark Heart

Prologue: Sprouting Darkness

Rall’s back ached, the young dark haired boy had spilled brandy on one of his fathers richest customer. His father had been so angry that he had beat Rall in front of the whole inn. No one had really paid any attention to this though, everyone who had ever visited the inn knew that the inn keeper disliked children, especially his own. After the beating Rall had promptly been left on the inn floor oozing blood, left to stare at his surroundings. The old oak floor would need cleaning afterward, something Rall was not looking forward to.

While this was happening an older man with graying hair and a worn out cloak that hid his face observed the small dark haired boy, who could be no older then thirteen, yet was forced to work like a slave. Nothing unusual about it. Still he could be useful considering whose son he was. The innkeeper had been very prosperous ever since the raids on the village had started, everyone was afraid of being caught out alone during a attack on the village by the dragon riders. Thus whenever a man had nowhere to go, he would come to the small dingy inn that was always packed with people, because of the inns popularity the local magicians had chosen to make it a place of safety, placing wards around the inn to keep out the raiders. With it’s old oak interior and always empty fire place it wasn’t the most comfortable place to be, but it was the safest. The old man grunted looked like his contacts were wrong, he was beginning to stand when it happened, the shrill high pitched screams of woman and the cursing of men drowned out all other noise in the inn. The old man smiled, seemed like the information was correct after all. He stood up and walked for the door, “What are you doing!?!” screamed the innkeeper. “If you leave you’ll break the ward!” The old man looked up “So?” “SO?!? SO!?! If you leave we’ll all die, you included!” the innkeeper was becoming hysterical. “No, I’m afraid your wrong, you will die, I however will not.” With that the man strode out the front door and out into the chaos.

“He’s mad!” the innkeeper whispered “Absolutely mad.” The innkeeper was very pale; his face normally red and blotchy had turned completely white, the only spot of color was his bushy black mustache. The whole crowd in the tavern stared at the door, waiting for the riders to appear and kill them all. To everyone’s shock and surprise nothing happened, no rider dressed head to toe in bright armor entered, no dragon stuck its head in the door and blasted them. Nothing happened. Nothing at all. For a moment no one moved, no one said anything. Then a loud cheer broke out from one of the men in the tavern. Everyone stared at him. “What?” asked the man who had cheered his small squished face and dimpled nose wrinkled in confusion. “Can’t a man be happy that the wizards have done their work?” “Done their work? Done their work!?! The towns probably burnt; the women are probably dead; our houses are probably gone, and you go off and cheer!?! You’re one of the most conceited, self-centered, selfish blokes I’ve ever met!” shouted another patron in the tavern. “Well.. well.. I didn’t mean it that way.” The man replied sounding sobered. The rest of the night followed in this fashion no one daring to go outside, everybody arguing with each other over what happened, why they were alive, and if it was a good or bad thing that had happened that night.
