A Comment/Suggestion on the end of the ban index

I understand why Browarod did it, since its hard to keep up with and not always worth it, but I strongly disagree with making asking about ban reasons a warnable offense. I think we have the right to know, since otherwise it is possible for a mod to ban without reason. I also think that it leads to rumors of why people are banned. Take polaris, he says his ban is for "suspected hacking" which I believe is a stupid reason, but if there were good motives it would be less upsetting. However, as it stands, we are shut out of the bans. While it may be none of our business what the mods do, these people are our friends, and if something happens to them, I believe we have the right to know what it is.

I admit, the Ban Index didn't work, and people were turning to other methods to find out, such as PMs and using the questions board. I don't know quite how to solve this communication problem, but you can't just ignore it. Therefore, I have some ideas that may or may not work

Allow PM questions on bans

Make a thread where people can ask and mods can answer

Make different section ban indexes so browarod isn't in charge of it all

Of course, modding is hard and I understand that, and whatever option is easiest for the mods is the one that I will support, as long as it isn't just ignoring the fact that our fellow members are being banned and we deserve to know why.

I agree that if you knew or befriended a fellow member that you have a right to know what happened. But what if the reason they were banned is something they wouldnt want to share? Then its an invasion of one's own privacy in which you have no right. So maybe with some limitations as to what the answers could be or something of that nature, like maybe being given a prompt box when u r banned asking u if you would like them to share the reason wqith people who ask. "hacking" is a good reason to ban someone to me but maybe a little more explaination is needed.... :?

I agree to giving the mods the benefit of a doubt when its a security problem or something personal or inappropriate. I just don't want the members to be constantly ignorant. I want everyone to be comfortable with the privacy of the bans and their right to inquire, even if there is no answer.

I can see that shutting it down completely may have been a bit of a bad cold turkey.

As such, PM's are now allowed. Be aware, though, the ban logs give basic details only, so unless you happen to PM the exact mod that banned the member you're asking about they may not have all the information, and you'll have to just accept it.

Also, individual mods can still prefer not to receive questions of bans over PM, so if they reply to you asking to not receive anymore questions about bans please respect their wishes and ask another mod next time.
