If I remember correctly' date=' katakana is just like kanji... only the symbols are much more jagged than in kanji... is that right...?

[/quote']

No, katakana and hiragana are the same. Kanji is completely different. :3

You are right about katakana being more jagged than hiragana;

カタカナ (katakana)

ひらがな (hiragana)

I don't like big pics in signatures. You have to keep'em in spoilers and in the end almost no one looks at em.

... and because most people on this site got ridiculously big signatures, I have put a cross in the "Don't view signatures"-box. ;p

I thought kanji were the symbols inside the hiragana and katakana alphabets.

Nah' date=' kanji are signs with a meaning, opposed to hiragana/katakana which just presents a sound.

For example, the world car (I am a car-nerd so : p);

Romaji: kuruma

Hiragana: くるま

Katakana: クルマ

Kanji: 車

While, as you may see, the kanji may represent several sounds as opposed to kana (hiragana/katakana) that only represent one sound each (ku + ru + ma).

Kanji most often consist of two readings, on'yomi based on the Chinese pronunciation and kun'yomi the genuine Japanese reading.

As for 車 (kuruma; [i']car [/i]) its kun'yomi is kuruma, but its on'yomi is sha. On'yomi is usually used in compound words as;

電車 (densha; electric train)

車輪 (sharin; wheel)

自動車 (jidousha; automobile)
