I would have silently ignored them. Then they'd lose the object of their fun.

Cuase someone would only call someone a freak for their own enjoyment.

So if you don't reply, it makes them bored, and they leave you alone. If you verbally abuse them, you're adding fuel to the fire.

My closest of friends all really don't like anime and tease me around because I love it' date=' but it's all in good fun cause we're all hella close ;D

At least we're understood in Japan x']

Isn't Otaku some kind of insult in Japan?

Nope, enjoying anime is common in Japan and is not an insult. Some Japanese don't like anime or manga, but the majority of them do. But no one's an otaku here, trust me. Otaku is more then just merely obsessive with anime, it goes on the line of hentai too. Being an Otaku shows that you love everything and anything about anime, no matter what. When in comparison to me, I don't like certain genres of anime. Plus, being an otaku shows that you're of ownership of at least more then ten figurines, art books, anime dvds, etc.

So maybe it could be used as an insult, to say that you're the kind of person who enjoys anime in a way of going insanly overboard...

I have 8 figurines, 5 art books, 20 doujinshis, 10 h-mangas, 3 h-novels : p

Might I call myself otaku?

Anime is quite otaku. Manga is not. (Almost) Everyone in Japan reads manga, but anime is more or less considered to be for children. All non-super-popular animes usually goes on times like one in the morning, when only the otakus are watching.

From the beginning otaku was quite an insult, but as the otakus started to call each other otaku it is now okay to say. Nowadays, it is used as nerd. Kuruma-otaku = car-nerd and so on.

Watch me top that...

17 figurines [5 of which I shipped from Japan], 4 art books, 18 doujinshis, 5 in kanji manga, 16 in kanji light novels [all of them are from the Shana series], and 68 English manga, 2 Box Sets, and 3 Wall Scrolls.

Hehe~ =D

Also, sou desuka? That's quite interesting about otakus. Though still keep in mind that real otakus are pretty crazed and the ONLY thing they care about is anime [this ruins their social and love lives]. But in America, I guess the definetion isn't that bad~

I use the term otaku in the North American sense, where it means liking anime. Otaku in Japanese roughly translates to "shut-in", someone who rarely comes out of the house due to their interests.

Also, anime is frought with traps. Being a very straight guy, I don't particularly like yaoi at all and I try to avoid yaoi and futanari, which I find nauseating. Yuri I don't mind, as most of the anime I watch feature all girl casts, so the romance fan-fics are always yuri.

Holo, those pics are all traps right?

Just look at the name of our club' date=' then look at all of us. You get the picture. We're basically LV 1. The ones in Japan are liek LV 9001.

Of course, due to me being viet, I can't have all the stuff that Holo has.

[/quote']

Fixed. That's about the right Power Level for the Japanese otakus.

You are mistaking "otaku" for "hikikomori". "Otaku" means "(your) house" and is an old-fashioned word for "you". Gene in Outlaw Stars uses it. (I love unusual Japanese) : D

"Hikikomori" on the other hand, means "shut in".

Another word that is often mistakenly used is NEET. No Employment, Education or Training = you are screwed. NEETs often become otaku hikikomoris, living on allowances from their parents. (Watch NHK)

Yup! The worst thing is, I used to like one of them, until... T_T

*jaw drops open* ...Okay' date=' you win x3

But still, I do not have a single Anime DVD... T_T

They are too expensive. I have heard that Japan has the highest CD/DVD prices in the world, and it would not surprise me.
