Umbra
The World Is Tuned To You (or simply Twitty) is so far only a project to me. Two different prologues, who might seem unrelated when read at different times, and a main story much unlike what one might expect.
FI, short for Frequency Indication, is a measurement of mental and psionic strength and accessibility to Psyches and Noise. Each living creature has a unique FI, specified in ten decimals; the value listed below is an average. FI0 = 0,001 FI (Shibuya RG)FI1 = 1 FI (Player without partner, Weak Noise)FI2 = 2 FI (Weak Player with Partner, Support Reaper, Medium Noise)FI3 = 6 FI (Medium Player with Partner, Harrier Reaper)FI4 = 24 FI (Strong Player with Partner, Reaper Officer, Taboo Noise)FI5 = 120 FI (Game-winning Player with Partner, Cantus Reaper, Elite Noise)FI6 = 720 FI (Tuned Player, Conductor, Reaper in Cantus Form, Hakubodenrei)FI7 = 5040 FI (Composer, Producer)FI8 = 40320 FI (Shibuya River, Celestial) FI9 = 362880 FI (Shibuya UG)FI10 = 3628800 FI (Noise Realm)FI11 = 39916800 FI (Secret Location) To calculate a person's FI in any realm, this method is applied: FIn = (FIo * (FIL2/FIL1)) / C FIn = new FIFIo = old FIFIL1 = First realm's FIFIL2 = New realm's FIC = a constant depending on two factors: If the person is a Noise and FIL2 = FI10, then C = 0,6. If FIL2 = FI10 but the person is not a Noise, it becomes 1,3. The Noise Realm is incredibly hostile to creatures other than Noise, weakening their FI, whereas it gives Noise a boost. So forth, a Composer's FI in the (FI11 Location) would be 5040 * 110, or 554400 FI.A Strong Noise's FI in Noise Realm is 240, and in (FI11 Location) * 10^-9. A Player's FI is 362880000 times more frequent than a human's.
The listed FI value is applied to that person alone: If that person has a partner, the FI is increased by that person's FI OR doubled, whichever is higher. (Players and Reapers only.)
Neku Sakuraba - A skilled Player that is currently playing his second Game in a row, after defeating the Game Master of the previous Game. First appearance in Day One, Shadow be my Friend.FI: 4986 Kuniumi Anami - Medic Reaper. Is supervising Juliet and Neku during their stay at Pork City. Has supreme healing abilities, but lack other skills. First appearance in Day Two, Release the Grip.FI: 14.

Let's say, for a moment, that there was more to the Noise than you'd think. That they were intelligent. That they communicate. And maybe that one day, they would find out about the Reapers and how they were used as personal guards and private assassins. That their creators had thrown them out in the dark, and came back with a leather whip. You'd think they'd be mad.
The man could not believe that he was alive. Not again. He had been dead for so long, it would only make sense for him to stay so. Apparently, the Reapers wanted him for another mission. Another Game, and because of that, they brought him back to life. Well, “life” wasn't really the right word for it. They would never bring him back to his actual life. He hadn't been really alive for over sixty years, not since World War two when they had dropped The Big A on Hiroshima, his hometown. There was nothing he could go back to. No one waiting for him back home, not only because they were dead, also because there was no home. The world as he knew it was gone, changed forever. When Shiraishi-sama had brought him back, he knew he had found salvation. Shiraishi trained him in the arts of the Reaper, how he would use his newfound strength to change the world around him. He taught him how to balance an erasure, so that it would not leave any traces in the Underground. He taught him the finer crafts of Noisemaking, or Tuning as he referred to it, although his student never understood why, and the use of mathematical formulas in the making of perfect Noise. A year after he had retrieved our man from the depths of hell, Shiraishi was erased. Killed, by a mere Player. Later on, that Player won the Game and got back to life. There was nothing the Reapers could do. Nothing at all. That's when Sho Minamimoto, last student of Shinichi Shiraishi, decided to make a difference and divide the Reapers to multiply his own power and add to the fear of the Players. He would be irrational. He would be incalculable. And one day, he would become the Composer, lord of the Reapers. That day would be a day for both Reapers and Players to fear.

Neku couldn't believe his eyes. Everything was the same as last time. Once again, he was at the scramble crossing, and he was no more to the living than a distant memory and a flicker of light in the shadows. They couldn't see him any more than they had seen the beasts, the Noise, he and Shiki had fought all around the town for the last seven days. He was back in the Reaper's Game. He fell to his knees, his hands closing in rage. “Why, why, why! Why do I have to do this! Why me, Reapers? Why me, of everyone! I'm not anyone!” Any minute now, his phone would go off and there would be another mission for him. And another one after that, and another one, until the Week was over. If he wasn't killed this time. He was lucky enough to survive the last Game, only to be thrown back into it. “This isn't right! This can't be right!” Now, Neku was screaming at the top of his lungs. “What did I do to deserve this, Reapers? Why can't you just bring us back!” Suddenly, there was a hand on his shoulder. “That's not the way they work, Sakuraba.” Neku shrieked, and staggered away. The hand he had only glimpsed for a few seconds was as pale as a full moon, and the nails were long and dyed dark. The girl that stood before him frightened him, chilled Neku to the bone. She was almost as tall as him, and her night-black hair went across her shoulders and down her back. Her skin was as pale as he had seen, and her eyes were the darkest green. The gray blouse and jeans she was wearing seemed to fit with her, as if they were made especially for her. Her smile was tinted and leaned slightly to the left. “You're foolish, Neku, if you think the Reapers actually can do that. They're exactly what they sound like.” She giggled. “The Reapers only bring death and devastation to where they go. There's only one of them that can bring others to life.” She raised a finger, and stopped smiling. “The Composer himself. Yoshiya Kiryu.” Neku stared back at the girl, mystified and frightened. “Who are you? How do you know my name?” The girl made a vague smile. “Well, how couldn't I? You're quite a celebrity among the Players, Sakuraba. The only surviving Player of the Reaper's Game, where over five hundred were erased in a matter of days...” She took out her cell phone, and showed it to Neku. “I got this message as soon as I got here.” Eyes wide open in fear, Neku read the words on the screen. Track down the renegade Player Sakuraba and erase him. You have (7(4)+2) minutes.Fail, and face erasure.~The Reapers He looked at the girl, who stared back at him. Her expression was completely serious. “Your mission... is to erase me? And if you don't...” The girl nodded. “We're all going to die. We only have twenty-five minutes left.” Ten minutes later, Neku and the girl had went to the only safe place he could think of that was even remotely close; the train station, close to the sealed-off path that led to the Shibuya River. He nodded at her. “What was your name again?” She sighed. “Juliet. Juliet Whitfield.”Neku was surprised. “American?”She shook her head, and Neku thought he could see a hint of a smile. “English.” Neku was about to open his mouth, but she placed her finger across his mouth. “I can't answer that question, Neku. I can't tell you why I was flung half across the world to be in Shibuya's Game. I can't remember anything from the last few years. All I know is how this game works and how to beat it.” She paused to take a breath. Neku could still see the pulsing timer on her palm. Ten minutes left, and then I'll be the only Player left in this Game. She'll be gone, and there's nothing I can do about it. He nodded at her. “Have you seen any other Players?” She nodded. “I've seen a few. An arrogant skater boy and some wisecracking little girl that looked a bit like him.” Beat and Rhyme. “A tanned blonde guy and a girl that didn't seem so smart.” Neku smiled. Sota and Nao. “Other than that, not too many.” Juliet shrugged. “Then, I haven't been to the entire city yet. I saw them on the way to you, outside that ramen shop in... Dogenzaka, was it?” Neku nodded, and wrinkled his forehead. “There's still one thing I don't understand, Juliet. How did you know where to find me?” Her eyes were suddenly concerned. “There was a girl... who said she knew you. She screamed out loud when she got the mission, so I got up to her. Told me everything about you.” She giggled. “Said you used to hang out at the crossing. So, I ended up there. Plus, I heard your screaming.” She smiled, and Neku felt his face flush. “This girl didn't happen to tell you her name, did she?” Juliet shook her head. “I was about to ask, but then she hurried away. Just like we did, right?” She smiled. Beep. They both froze. Juliet's phone had got a message, and so had Neku's. A message from the Reapers. She got it out faster than him, and her eyes were transfixed to the screen as Neku struggled to open the message. When the words appeared, one by one, he understood why Juliet had been horrified. Travel to Udagawa Street. You have 101bin minutes.Fail, and face erasure.~The Reapers Neku felt the familiar surge of pain as the timer attached itself to his hand. Five minutes. Five minutes to get across town. Then, he remembered something from the last Game. “Juliet, listen. We don't have to get out of here.” She looked at him, eyes shimmering in not-quite-fear. “The goal of this mission is that a Player must reach Udagawa in five minutes. This doesn't mean that we have to go there, just that someone has to.” Juliet shook her head. “That's not how they work, Neku. We'll have to do it. If we don't, then nobody will. Everyone will die, and it will be our fault. That's just the way it is.” Without another word, she got off her feet and dashed out of the station. Neku stayed where he was, unsure what to do. She reminds me of Shiki, he realized. In some ways, she reminded him of Shiki. The very person whose life was on the line because of him. He sighed, and closed his eyes. He could hear the timer ticking on slowly, and started counting. Without realizing it, he fell asleep. Not far away, at what is known by most as the Shibuya River, gears were set into motion as the world turned beneath it. The only exit, an alley leading to the train station, has been blocked by Chains of Fate ever since the Games were first held, when Tokyo was founded. From time to time, as the real world changed, the location of the Chains of Fate were moved, little by little and no more than three feet at a time. The River was bound to these Chains, for combined they form a defensive wall. The ultimate defense of the Dead God's Pad, where the Conductors and Composers rest. This is the only thing that is different in the Underground from the real world, the only thing that is distinguishable from the rest. The Chains, the River, and the Pad. The way it had always been. To Kaito Nekokaburi, they were a mere annoyance. They were in the way, and therefore they must be removed. He had crossed the River only moments ago, and left the Pad only minutes before. The blood of six Reapers covered his clothes and his Ookamizou. He looked down on the blade in his right hand, the blade shaped like a wolf's fang and the hilt of similar fashion. It was as much a part of him as he was a part of it. With a flicker of his wrist, he slashed out. Thunder trembled as the Chains fell before him, and lightning flashed when they hit the ground. Ookamizou's edge was unscathed, undamaged. As always. Kaito smiled, a terrible grin that would have scared the Devil himself, and went on. The Reapers would be looking for him, but the Players would have no idea what exactly they were dealing with. He had heard from one of the guards - before he had sliced him open, that was - that Sakuraba was in the game once more. This time, he would not fail. His victim would perish before this Game was over, before the Reapers offered a second chance again. Ookamizou greedily absorbed his hatred and his anger, and he welcomed it. Calmness was the state of mind he needed when he was on the hunt. And this time, Sakuraba, you won't run. Suddenly, the ticking stopped. Juliet froze mid-step. No... not already! This can't be it! The mission can't be over yet! She could even see Udagawa there, far off in the distance. If I hadn't argued with Neku, we might have... I might have... She shook her head. “This won't be it, Shinigami. Even if you come at me with all your power, I will stand and fight. You can't take away this life from me so easily.” Suddenly, someone tapped her shoulder. She saw the red glow from the palm faster than the face. “They won't do that. Not now, at least.” She turned around. It was that same guy from before, the tanned blonde and his semi-intelligent girlfriend. Neku seemed to know them, at least; He had relaxed a bit when she had mentioned them. “They won't be killing us today, miss. Look, the mission was finished and all, so we're safe for today.” He opened up his palm, and Juliet's eyes grew in surprise. The timer had stopped, yes, but at 1:52. Someone had got to Udagawa. This guy's right. We're safe. Of course, in the moment of peace, that was when everything fell apart.
A crash of thunder erupted throughout town. Juliet, Sota and Nao stood perfectly still, shocked. Something with immense power had just been released, they could tell. Sota shivered. “That... came from the River.” Even in her fear, Juliet managed to turn her head at him.“The river?” She had only been to Shibuya for a few hours, but she had visited Tokyo a few years ago with her parents. As far as she knew, there were no rivers in the city. Sota nodded, and looked at her puzzled face. “You don't know, do you?” Juliet shook her head. “The River is a floating mass of Noise that protects the Conductor and the Composer. Apart from those two, the River is the most powerful entity in Shibuya. Now... it seems that someone has crossed it.” Almost as on command, a lightning bolt split the sky in half as it struck somewhere in Shibuya. Sota's eyes flew open, and he turned to his friend. “Nao, take this girl and run. Take her to Hanekoma's place. I think... we're in for something tough.” The girl, apparently Nao, frowned at him. “You can't take on that thing - whatever it is - by yourself, Sota. You know I'm better with the psychs than you. You take her.” She smiled, and Juliet stared at the girl.I'd never think this girl could trump anyone in psychokinesis.Sota stared at Nao for a few seconds, and Juliet thought she could see the spark of competition between them. Then, he sighed. “Fine. I'll go with her. But take this before you go.” He took out something from his pocket, and tossed it to Nao. Her eyes opened wide in surprise.“You can't just give away your Pin like that, Sota. What if the Reapers catch you? You'll be gone in seconds.”Another flash of lightning struck. Sota smiled. “From the sound of it, the Reapers have their hands full. Either way, you'll need it more than I. It'll magnify your psyches tenfold, more than enough to stand against an army of Noise. I betcha could even take on the River if ya wanted.” Megumi Kitaniji was worried, Sho could tell. He had only seen the Conductor this bad once before; when the two of them had arrived at Kaito's cell only half an hour ago to take him to the Confession Room. They had found it empty and the guards slaughtered. Minutes later, Kitaniji issued a Red Skull warning on Nekokaburi, and sent out an extermination squad of four Harriers. Just now, a Support had found them dead not far from the River. The biggest scandal in modern history. A Reaper, not even trained officially, had erased six of the highest Harriers and fled from the Dead God's Pad, right under the eyes of the Conductor himself. Minamimoto was only slightly bothered. Sure, Kaito was powerful, but he was nothing compared to himself. Sho had seen him fight, in the great Game of Titans thirty years ago, and his style was mediocre at best. It was all about power, fierce and reckless. He would need more than that to take on Minamimoto or any of the Higher Ones. Kitaniji, Kiryu, Konishi... triple K could wipe him out easily. But why the factor is Kitaniji so worried, then? To him, Nekokaburi is zero. Sho smiled. With Kaito on the run, and Kitaniji on the way to the asylum, this is my chance. He cleared his throat. "The radians have cleared their mission, you know. Time to equalize them, maybe? Set them to zero as they approach infinity?" Kitaniji stared at him, his eyes tainted and... evil, it seemed.“You think this is the time to discuss the Players, Game Master? Six of our own have been wiped out by a prisoner! And it happened under my command! I have disgraced our Shibuya and thinned our ranks for nothing, Minamimoto, and you dare even mention the Players?!” Then, he sighed, and sat down. “Give them a few hours until we can secure the Pad from any other attacks. We don't want everyone else here to be at risk as well.” Sho nodded.“Positive, Conductor. I'll ready a new Mission for them in the meantime.”Kitanji smiled. “It's your Game, Sho. Don't wear the Players out on the first day.” Beep. Neku's eyes flung open. The phone had awakened him, with the terrible little signal that told him he had received a text. In other words, a new mission. “At least I survived the first Day. It can't be that bad...” Just as the screen lit up, someone entered the train station. Someone that came from the River. Without thinking, Neku closed his phone and dove into the shadows. The air itself shivered around the newcomer, as if it was very warm, but he didn't look troubled at all. In fact, Neku could see that he was smiling. His smile frightened Neku more than anything else, it was a smile not even a mother could love. For some reason, he feared this man more than anything else. The Conductor, the Composer, erasure, even this Game itself seemed minor and inconvenient compared to this man. Not ten feet from Neku, the man stopped, his eyes away from him. “You're hiding somewhere in this city, Sakuraba, and I'll find you. You'll pay for what you did to my master.” The man unsheathed a great fangshaped sword, shimmering with blue light, and raised it into the air. He closed his eyes. The air around him shivered faster, until it was even hard to see through. Everything became a blur. Then, before Neku's very eyes, the air changed. The currents became wings, the spinning winds became muscles, and the still air turned into wicked eyes. A swarm of Noise had appeared around the man, at least eight or ten. Vultures, wolves, bats and ferrets. Impossible, Neku thought. He knew that Reapers were the ones that created the Noise, but just like that? And he could even see them without using his Pin. They're here. Somehow, that man pulled them into this place. These noise wouldn't wait for a Player to attack them. They would strike down immediately, before anyone had a chance to react. “Now go, my hunters. Find Sakuraba before this Day is over. I'll be the executioner.” Without a sound, the Noise ran out into the streets of Shibuya. The man laughed. “You'll regret the day you angered me, Sakuraba. The vengeance of Kaito Nekokaburi may strike swiftly, but the torment shall be eternal.” With those words, he left the station. Neku sighed of relief. This guy is looking for me. But why? I have never seen him before, and I surely haven't killed anyone. He climbed to his feet, and opened his phone again. Locate the Hand of Shibuya and release the Cursed Sword. You have (X-1)X(X-1)X(X+2) minutes, where X is the number of missions you have had today, including this one. Fail, and face erasure.~The Reapers. Neku frowned. “That can't be right. We've only had one mission today, so that makes it...” He did the math for a few seconds. “Zero minutes? You're giving us a mission we've already failed? That's low, Reapers, even for you.” Then, he noticed the timer. “Three hours? But this is our first mission today, there's no way that-” “Guess again, Player.” Neku froze. The two Reapers had appeared seemingly out of nowhere; the tall, dark-haired guy wearing a hooded sweater and the short girl that stood slightly behind him must have sneaked up on him. They had come from the River as well, and the black wings on their back betrayed their allegiance. “Reapers.” The man nodded. “Step aside, Player. Blocking our way earns you no good, and will just hurt your friends.” Neku froze, and the Reaper smiled. “Right now, a dangerous Reaper is on his way to the scramble crossing. You must have sensed his presence, however weak you may be.” Neku nodded. “We have been assembled to hinder his advances until the rest of us can be assembled.”Neku nodded, and walked aside. His eyes fell on the shorter girl. She seemed drifting, as if her thoughts were elsewhere. Her black hair fell over her eyes, which appeared dark purple to him. As the Reapers dashed past him, the girl slowed down. “Just so you know, Player. The first day of the rest of your life is by no means over yet. More will come.” Without giving Neku the slightest chance to reply, she vanished after her partner. Neku remained where he was, confused by her words. The first day... is not over. More to come. Then, it all clicked. “We're still on Day One?” He checked the time on his phone. I only slept for fifteen minutes? In the street? Miyashita Park was surprisingly calm, Juliet thought. There were only a few low-class Noise drifting around, probably created by bored Reapers, and it was completely void of other Players. She and Sota were alone as they left the underpass and came into a place of harmony. Sota nodded at her. “Alright, head to Hanekoma's place. You know WildKat, right?” She nodded. For some reason, the memory of her trip to Tokyo a few years ago was intact, and they had visited that café back then. Sota smiled. “Good. I'll meet you there.” He dashed back into the underpass again, leaving Juliet standing in the middle of the street. “Wait! Where are you going...” Beep. She read the message. Another mission? They can't be serious. And what is this “Hand of Shibuya”, really? She sighed. Maybe this Hanekoma fellow will know something. She ran off, through the sparsely vegetated Miyashita Park - Seriously, how can anyone call this a park? There's like... one tree. - and turned on to Cat Street. She remembered the café instantly, and walked over to it. Inside, Hanekoma was fighting a dragon.
“What do you think, Hinako?” Takashi was stressed. They were at the heels of Nekokaburi, one of the greatest Harriers to have ever existed, and their mission was to stop him. How could anyone possibly think we could do this? Takashi himself had only become a Reaper the year before, and Hinako was one of the youngest. Nekokaburi had already killed six Reapers, possibly in one blow with that cursed sword of his, and broken the Chains of Fate, something even the Conductor thought impossible. His partner nodded.“Darkness surrounds that man's path, Takashi, and it is up to us to stop him. No matter what.” She pointed at something ahead, and Takashi turned his gaze. What he saw filled him with fear. A spider, larger than some of the nearby houses, stood before them. At it's feet lay over twenty bodies, slaughtered beyond recognition. Takashi thought he could see a pair of black wings among the scattered arms and legs. This Noise bastard killed a Reaper... As he was about to take a step forward, Hinako put her hand on his shoulder, and shook her head. The meaning was obvious. Don't you dare. “Why not, Hinako? This is clearly one of Nekokaburi's creations, why shouldn't we stop it? It's harvesting Players by the second!” Hinako shook her head again.“If we fight it, Takashi, Nekokaburi will kill both of us in a matter of minutes. We will be too tired to stand against him, and we will perish.” She nodded to the left. “Besides, don't you see where we are?” He turned his head, and a smile spread across his face. “Hachiko... Good thinking.” Suddenly, Nao froze. A wave of pure energy rushed through her veins, tossing her off the ground like a used glove. In mid-air, she saw other Players falling to the ground, arms torn off and bodies sliced open. A barrage of green orbs appeared around her, crashing into her flesh. She felt as if her entire body had caught on fire, and everything seemed blurry. A few seconds later, she landed on the street. A bright giggle filled the air. “Well-well, what do we have here?” Nao reached for the pins in her pocket - unharmed, it appeared - and grabbed the two Player Pins. Their energy spread through her veins, rejuvenating her and healing enough of her wounds for her to climb to her feet. Then, the perpetrator revealed herself. The tall woman in the dark robes and the completely white hair could have passed for a normal human, hadn't it been for her face. Where the eyes once had been was only a faint, green glow which filled the cavities perfectly, and her skin looked - and felt, Nao was sure - much like dried bark. The woman smiled at Nao. “A Player, capable of surviving the Wake... I'm amazed. Master Nekokaburi would very much like to meet you, Nao Honjo.” The woman raised her hands, and she uttered a single word. “Shinroukyuu!” With a flash of purple light, a great ebony longbow appeared in her hands, an arrow ready. Nao gasped, and the woman smiled. “Scared, child? The Shinroukyuu has brought down many a Player before you.” Without another word, she released the arrow. Juliet threw herself to the side as Hanekoma and the dragon flew out through the window, breaking the glass and shaking the walls. The dragon grinned at its opponent. “You don't have a chance at beating me, Producer. Not even with your strength can you best me as a Ryuotai. Surrender, Hanekoma, and I might let you live.” Hanekoma smiled, his hands glowing crimson. “You think so, Mukuro Yamashi? Maybe I have a different trick up my sleeve.” He slammed his hands together, sending ripples through the air. He formed a series of complex signs, too fast for Juliet's eyes to follow, and thrust them into the air. “Meibatsu no Genki!” A gash opened in the dragon's head, and blood gushed out through the opening. The dragon roared out in pain, and Hanekoma dashed forward, under the dragon's guard. His hands came down on the dragon's scales again and again, revealing more and more of the unprotected skin below. Then, suddenly, the dragon stopped moving. It made strange, coughing noises, and it took Juliet a few seconds to understand that it was laughing. “You are a worthy opponent, Hanekoma... I am glad to die by your hands. Master Nekokaburi will enjoy killi-” Moving so fast that Juliet had no chance of seeing it, Hanekoma drove his arm through the dragon's head. For a split second, everything was still. The dragon's head fell apart, revealing only dust inside. In a matter of moments, the body crumbled to sand and vanished. Hanekoma fell to his knees, gasping for breath. “Ah! Mister Hanekoma!” Juliet ran up to him, and tried to lift his almost limp body. “Hanekoma, are you alright?” He slowly opened his eyes, and looked at Juliet. “...Who are you? I don't... know you.” Juliet shook her head.“I'm a friend of Neku... Sota brought me here.” Hanekoma nodded slowly, and stepped away from Juliet. Suddenly, Juliet noticed dozens of wounds on Hanekoma's body; cuts and bruises and scratches - and he seemed to skimp a bit on his left leg. “You're terribly injured, mister Hanekoma. Let's get inside so that you can-”“No need to.” With his uninjured left arm - the right one was bleeding and covered in dragon brain - he pulled out a blue pill from his pocket and swallowed it. His entire body shivered, and slowly the injuries healed themselves. The cuts closed, the leg softened out, and the bruises vanished. Hanekoma took a deep breath, and nodded at Juliet. “Emergency O-pills. They can cure most injuries as long as they're not fatal.” WildKat café was a mess. There was not a single piece of furniture that wasn't broken and shattered into pieces. Hanekoma frowned. “Nekokaburi'll have to pay for this when we get him.” Juliet looked at him. He looked almost the same as last time she had been here, except that he looked a bit taller now. “Mister Hanekoma...” He raised his hand.“Please, my father is Mister Hanekoma. Call me Sanae.” Juliet frowned.“Alright... Sanae. What exactly was that dragon? You seem to know it somehow.” Hanekoma looked at her for a few seconds. His eyes were dark and unfriendly, and Juliet had to hold back a gasp.“That... dragon, as you call it, was one of Nekokaburi's men. You've heard of Kaito Nekokaburi, right?” Juliet shook her head, and Hanekoma raised an eyebrow. “Either way, he's our enemy. The one that attacked me here was one of his servants, the Hakubodenrei, even though I suspect that was the weakest of them. His name was Mukuro Yamashi, and he used to be a Reaper.”“Used to? I thought if you were a Reaper, you stayed that way.”Hanekoma shook his head. “Certain powerful Reapers can acquire an alternate shape known as a Cantus form. If you stay in your Cantus form for too long, it becomes your regular form and you cannot change back. You also lose all of your Reaper powers and is exiled from the Reaper society. You simply become a Yuotai - a bodiless soul.” He sighed. “However, even for Yuotai, there are means for evolution. A normal Yuotai is an incredibly harmless spirit and can only injure others like itself. That's what I suspect Mukuro did. By killing hundreds of thousands of Yuotai, it is possible to become something greater, with the power of five Reapers - a Ryoutai, a dragon soul.” He sighed again. “Unfortunately, it is near impossible to completely destroy a Ryoutai.” Nao fell to the ground, her chest impaled by almost a dozen arrows. Her opponent smiled. “You should be completely paralyzed by now. Shinrouyumi's arrows slows down your central nervous system until it is completely nullified. Still, you impress me. Most people fall down after the third or fourth arrow, but you've stayed on your feet. Kaito will surely enjoy you.” Nao cursed silently, and closed her fists around the Pins. No matter what this woman said, she wasn't fully frozen, but almost. Is this thanks to Sota's pin? Would I be dead by now if I didn't have it? Even with it, I'm losing this battle. She had managed to dodge the arrows for a few minutes, until one struck her shoulder. She started moving slower and slower until her legs went numb and she fell. With great effort, Nao managed to turn her head. “You never told me your name, Reaper.” The archer laughed. “You can still move, Player! Impressive!” In an instant, a ripple of pain spread through Nao's body. “And don't ever call me a Reaper again, you hear that? I am Jukyu Ketsuki, captain of the Hakubodenrei. We don't serve no Composer. Only master Kaito.” As Jukyu came closer, Nao could see that she hadn't even scratched her enemy. What are these people? With no effort at all, Jukyu lifted Nao with her right arm and threw her onto her shoulder. Sota arrived just in time to see his sister getting carried off, impaled in countless places by giant arrows, by the enemy. He fell to his knees, shambling in grief. “Nao... why? Why!” Then, he saw the Pin. It was lying there, like a black hole in infinity, greedily feeding off his thoughts. His Player Pin, waiting to be picked up. It fit perfectly into his hand, and he stared at it for a few minutes. Pin in one hand, timer in the other. Two hours left. But what's the point? Without Nao, I might just as well toss myself to the Noise. When Neku arrived at the scramble crossing, everything had fallen apart. Noise were rampaging everywhere, Players were struggling to keep themselves alive, and the Reapers found themselves outnumbered by their minions. This was war, pure war. And he, Neku Sakuraba, did not have a partner. Juliet had left for Udagawa before he could establish the connection, and now he had no idea where she was. I can only hope it's somewhere safe. And of course, there was the mission, too. The danger from the Reapers was not to be forgotten, even in the wake of destruction. He had passed the statue of Hachiko on the way to the crossing, and saw the corpse of a giant spider pressed against a wall, something only the Reapers he had encountered earlier could have done. Or that crazy with the sword, even. Doesn't seem like he'd kill the Noise, though. He looked at his cell phone again, studying the text message. Hand of Shibuya... Cursed Sword... what can it be? Then, it suddenly clicked. “Reapers, you bastards.” The letters are the same. “Hand of Shibuya” can be written as HoS, and “Cursed Sword” can be written as CS. Backwards, that's SoH and SC. The Statue of Hachiko, and the Scramble Crossing. “Right. I've located the Hand, and now I need to release the Cursed Sword.” He looked over the crossing, with the raging war going by without noticing him, and sighed. “Aah! This doesn't work at all!” Then, for the first time in what seemed a week, he heard a familiar voice. “Hey Phones, stop the shoutin' already! If you dun' want all the Noise on you!”“Shush, Beat. We should be glad we managed to find Neku in all this insanity.” Beat. Rhyme. Two names he thought he'd never be glad thinking. Sure enough, the two Players he and Shiki had met last Game emerged from the crowd, carefully dodging a large crow-Noise that flew by. Instantly, Rhyme ran up to him. “Neku, I'm so glad you're still in the Game. Beat here thought you'd already been erased, but no, I knew you were still with us.” Neku nodded.“I've been to places. Anyways, you have better luck with the mission?” He swept his hand over the surroundings, grasping the malice of the Scramble. “Know how to release this place?” Rhyme smiled.“Well, first I thought tha-” She froze. “Wait a minute, this place? I thought we were going to release Hachiko. Their names were in reverse, so why shouldn't the locations be?” Neku was dumbstruck. Beat smiled.“I know dat face, Phones. I get dat face all 'de time when I'm arguin' with her. But it makes sense, y'know?” Rhyme nodded.“Thanks, Beat. We tried to get to Hachiko, but the Noise are blocking the way. We were just about to fight through when we heard your screaming.” She smiled, and for the second time in a day, Neku flushed.“No need to be pecky about that, Rhyme. I'm going with you to Hachiko.” Suddenly, everything stopped. The fights ceased in a matter of moments, and Neku felt an intense pressure build up in the air. Each and every Noise in the entire crossing, over a hundred, rose into the air and was pulled to the center. Soon, they had formed a completely circular orb of varying colors. Neku took a step towards Beat and Rhyme. “You're feeling it too, right?” They nodded in unison. Whatever caused this pressure was inside that orb, waiting, resting. Feeding. All around the crossing, everyone's eyes were fixed at the orb as it twitched and moved when a Noise tried to break free. “Rhyme, Beat, this is our chance. No one's watching the route to Hachiko now. We better go before that thing unleashes itself.” They nodded again, and the three Players crept along the walls to Hachiko. A few minutes later, they arrived at the Statue. The pressure still hadn't vanished, but it decreased. Rhyme, Beat and Neku stared at the statue, faces empty. It was surprisingly silent here, despite the great monstrosity just a few hundred meters away. Neku sighed.“So, what do we do, really?” Rhyme shook her head.“No clue. I thought it would be obvious when we got here, but... no. Blank.” She was about to sit down when a voice filled the air.“My spirit is restless, Players. Feed me with your power and I will return to normality.” Neku's arms and legs suddenly twitched, and slowly moved him towards the Statue. He felt as if he was just pulled along, like a puppet. His hand was placed on the Statue, and it drained him almost completely. The last thing Neku saw before he passed out was a glistening white wolf springing to life. Day OneBrothers in HeartEnded
Yashiro pulled the lever, and the magnificent Sleeper's Gate closed itself without a sound. She was already on her way back to the Pad when Kariya caught up with her. “Why the sad face, partner?” Yashiro muttered something, and kept up her pace.“I just can't believe I'm stuck with tucking in the Players again!” She sighed. “I was stuck with that Hinako girl here last Week, too. You know her, right?” Kariya nodded.“Shinto Hinako, yes. I know of her. They say she's stronger than she looks.” Yashiro shrugged, and smiled.“Like you, then? Both of us know you should be with the higher-ups rather than on the field.” Kariya smiled.“Just don't feel like it. Besides, there's no one to boss around up there.” With a laugh, the two of them headed down to the Pad below. No Player has set foot in the Sleeper's Hall since the Games first started. Someone entering the Hall for the first time, and actually awake, might be confounded by the large clusters hanging from the ceiling, until they spot the faces. The Players are fast asleep, ten feet above the ground and thrown together by the hundred. At this state, the Players are incredibly vulnerable; only two things can awaken them, a Reaper's Word of Command or a beam of daylight. They will not respond to pain or the voices of others. This is why the Sleeper's Hall must only be open in the night, and sealed during the day. To open the Sleeper's Gate, two Reapers are required, but you can close it on your own, and open it from the inside on your own. I am alone, in a body of hundreds. We are one, for none of us is as strong as all of us. I am alone. They call us Legion. I am Core. We are Legion. Just as Uzuki Yashiro, Harrier Reaper and selected Gatekeeper for the first Night, closed the Sleeper's Gate, something slipped inside. A Noise, no larger than a fly. Yashiro can be forgiven partially for not noticing it, for reasons that make everything so much worse. The fly was as black as the nightsky around it. A Taboo Noise, almost unbeatable alone and a difficult challenge in a team. As the Gate closed, the fly grew. It changed, some of the legs growing back into the body, and the face changed into that of a human, with cold, blue eyes and black hair. The wings formed into a coat, a long black coat that almost touched the ground. The Taboo Noise had changed into a human, and it's name was known among the Reaper lines; Shinku Jinsei. One of the few Reapers that used a gun in battle. Most considered it to be unfair, but no one disrespected Shinku for that. No one dared to. Once, during an Emergency Call, Shinku had climbed to the top of the 104 Building, where the threats had escaped, sneaked inside and shot all of them in the head in less than half an hour. Nine Players, gone just like that. Recently, he had been killed. He was one of the six Reapers that were sent out to take down Nekokaburi. When Shinku arrived at the scene, two of them had already been taken down, cleaved in half by the sword that now held their blood. Ookamizou. For Shinku, it was hate at first sight. The blade emitted a strange, tainted aura that would drive anyone mad. His fellow Reaper, Uchikiri Yurai, was transfixed by the blade as Nekokaburi laid his eyes on them.“You, Reapers, you have potential. Your desires are the same as mine. You would serve me well... It's your choice. You can either live under my blade.” He readied Ookamizou, and Shinku staggered backwards. “Or you can die by it.” Shinku was paralyzed, by fear and the pure will of Nekokaburi's blade, and he watched in fear as his comrade rushed forward, hands high and charged with blue light. Not even ten seconds later, his torso fell to the ground. Finally, the grip on Shinku was released, and he uttered a sentence.“I will serve you... Master Kaito.” Nekokaburi shook his head. “It was never your choice to begin with, Reaper. Sakasama Naihatsu.” Shinku fell to the ground in torment as his skin changed, turned into darkest gray. His eyes became pits of darkness, and he felt as if a hundred thousand demons were tearing his flesh apart. Every now and then, he saw them. The demons were small, black rodents that took a piece of his eye, a bite of his cheek and ripped off his ears. Suddenly, he felt Nekokaburi's presence. “Listen closely, Reaper. The others will find you in a few hours, and they'll think that you're dead. You sure look like it to me, and I even know what happened. They will bury you inside the Sleeper's Hall, along with every other Reaper to have ever been defeated. Most likely your friends over here as well. If you truly wish to be my servant, part of my Hakubodenrei, then you will obey my command.” He touched Shinku's chest, and everything went black. Everything that existed was the master's voice. “I will create a Taboo Form for you, which you will use to slip inside the Hall. There, you will reunite with your body and gain powers beyond any Harrier. Then, you will slay every Player inside and escape without anyone noticing.” Shinku twitched. After being compressed into the fly for so long, it felt strange to be back inside himself. He had seen his body briefly before he returned into it, and could clearly see the bite marks around the hollow openings that used to be his eyes. His skin was now gray, so gray it was almost black. The surge of power was incredible. He couldn't even grasp the boundaries of it. He must be eight... maybe even ten times stronger than before. He turned his gaze, where red lights flickered from his eyes, to the cluster of Players above. Time to start working.

Neku slowly opened his eyes. He was overlooking Shibuya, far above the ground. Apparently, he was in some sort of skyscraper, one of the few in the city. Two words - Pork City - appeared in his mind. “Pork City?” This didn't happen during the last week. Suddenly, he realized he wasn't alone. Juliet was lying on a bed not far from him, her arms and legs covered in bandage. A Reaper in a white jacket and trousers stood next to her. He turned to Neku.“Good, you're up.” He offered his hand. “Kuniumi Anami. Chief Reaper Medic.” Neku shook his hand. “You're on the Lapin Angelique floor of Pork City, as you have realized, which currently serves as an emergency hospital for injured Players. ” Neku was confused.“Wait, what?” Kuniumi shook his head.“I'm going to be honest with you, Neku. We don't have a clue. This morning, we found over seventy percent of the Players either dead or severely injured. We don't know how many have been erased during the course of the night.” He gestured at the door. “Right now, over four hundred Players are in a lethal state, and over two hundred have passed away during the last few hours. We approximate that about thirty or forty Players in total will survive the coming eight hours.” He nodded at Juliet. “Sadly enough, this girl isn't one of them. We couldn't find a Partnership connection in her file, and she's losing strength by the minute. If this keeps up, she'll probably be gone within the hour.” It was a place of darkness, the land we entered. The Vampire, the Dragon, the Gunslinger and the Scythe lined up behind me. I had only heard of this place from my studies with Shiraishi-sama, but I recognized it immediately. Reitenmugendai, the land where everything was and nothing existed. The Eye's Gate closed behind us as we took a step forward, and I felt my power multiply by the hundred. This shall be our home, and we shall be a part of it. Then, the Reapers will fall. I'll give the other Prodigies a last chance to join us before we take Sakuraba down. At the Dead God's Pad, the only other fortress the Reapers still held, everything had fallen out of control. The two Reapers that were in control of the Sleeper's Gate the night before, Uzuki Yashiro and Koki Kariya, were nowhere to be found, and are presumed to be erased. The others are kept either at the Pad or transported to Pork City to help with the urgent state of the Plaeyers. Among those who were to remain at the Pad were Hinako Awase, given the nickname Shinto, and Takashi Kiryu. The latter sighed. “This is just getting worse, Hinako. Nekokaburi's pulling our strings by the minute, I'm sure of it. We're following his plan step by step, I'm sure of it. We can't keep going like this.” Hinako shook her head, but remained silent. Takashi had grown used to his partner's manners a long time ago. Shinto. She had earned the name, but Takashi didn't use it. It was beneath him, who had worked with her for so long. He nodded. “We should have done something by now... taken action against Nekokaburi and his men. Yet... nothing has happened.” Suddenly, an alarm rang throughout the Pad. Takashi froze. “The Bell... We're being attacked!” The Reapers knew that Nekokaburi would strike again, while they were still recovering from the attack. They hadn't expected something like this. Takashi looked out one of the windows, and staggered back in fear. “What... is that thing?” He heard steps from behind, and turned. The man who came towards them was no ordinary Reaper.“It's a zetta large Legion Noise, that's what it is.” Sho Minamimoto, one of the few Reapers who had achieved a Cantus form and this week's Game Master, smiled. Hinako quietly observed as Minamimoto came closer, and Takashi thought he could see a speck of hatred in her eyes. “The sum of over a thousand Noise, probably. Off to the defense line with ya.” His smile widened. “Commander Triple-Seven is leading the battle. Getta him, radians.” A huge explosion suddenly rocked the Pad, knocking Takashi to the floor. Before he got up, Hinako was already on her way down. A few minutes later, he was on her tail. The Sinner's Trail was a battlefield. Reapers lay all over the place, either dead or severely injured, and those who were still alive were barely standing. Takashi stared in awe at the magnificent creature that stood before them. Takashi was overawed. That thing took down every single one of us. The great dragon before them, covered in black, shifting scales, roared as a shower of dark lightning erupted from it's mighty jaw. Hinako nodded, her face slightly paler than usual.“A high-class Core, stronger than predicted. Most likely one of the Hakubodenrei. Adjusting strength equally.” She revealed a pin from her sleeve, completely white with the number twenty on it. With a flicker of her fingers, the pin turned to dust and she smiled. Takashi didn't catch her start, but suddenly she was moving - running with godlike speed towards the dragon. Come on, Hinako. Give me one hit, at least. He set off after her again, now and then catching a glimpse of white fur or a claw. Then, she was in the air. I've got something in our eyes. It hurts us. No. It's not in our eyes, but in front of them. It's attacking my eyes. I have to stop it from attacking our eyes, otherwise we'll be blinded. The dragon suddenly smiled, and Takashi froze. Something was happening. Something was terribly wrong. The air thickened, the sky seemed a bit less bright. The dragon spoke, with a high, commanding tone.“As the gods of Death become what they once controlled, a path to salvation can be found among the unforgiven. Release the souls of broken bonds!” A thundering roar echoed throughout the field as the dying Reapers, even those Takashi had assumed dead, cried out in sheer agony as their bodies were lifted off the ground. “Inversion Blast!” Hinako didn't even have time to feel the black light cover her, shield her off from everything else. Even though they were gods of death, she had never died herself. She had been converted a long time ago, infused with Reaper power by her master. The sheer force of the blast tore off her right arm in an instant, the leg going down the same path a moment later. She only had the time to utter a single word. Sometimes, that was all you needed. Takashi knew that his partner was exceptional, that her power was greater than most of the others. If anyone of them could take down the dragon, it would be her. So, when she was torn apart by the dragon's breath, he was out of his mind - if only for a matter of moments. Right now, he was standing only thirty feet away from the dragon's feet, Hinako over a hundred feet above him - at eye level with the dragon. The moment Hinako's torn limbs fell to the ground, a brilliant white explosion split the black light in half. “The bigger they come, Core...” As the white faded away, Hinako smiled. Her body was feline, covered in short, white fur with brown stripes along the back. Her lost limbs were replaced with compressed spiritual energy, bone-like strings with a distinctive purple shade. Long ago, only a few months after she had graduated, her master had taught her how to summon her Cantus form. It varied from person to person, apparently, and hers was Lutra Cantus - the otter. Her main power was her speed; against a big, clumsy target like a Legion Noise, it was perfect.“... the harder they fall.” Suddenly, she was gone. She had vanished from Takashi's sight in the blink of an eye. The cries from the Reapers around him suddenly stopped as the dragon's mighty cry replaced it. Only then did Takashi notice something. Most of the dragon's neck was missing, something that was not quite energy gushing out of the open wound. Before his eyes, the dragon's body fell apart into several hundred...“Pig Noise?” There was no mistaking about it; what the torn scales and claws turned into was Pig Noise, swarming everywhere and sniffing the dying Reapers. “As I suspected.” As the dragon's skin fell to pieces, literally, around her, the Core Noise quickly dodged one of her blows. The inside of the mighty Noise was a large chamber, where the Core drifted freely. “The Noise you polarized yesterday were only held together by your own willpower. Since you have to focus on fighting me now, they're inversely polarized into Positive Noise.” The Core, nothing more than a completely circular orb, gave off a green light and shattered. The dragon's empty shell exploded, sending Noise flying everywhere. “Of course, Awase-san.” Before her stood a man with white, spiky hair and fully black eyes. There was no pupil, no iris; only darkness.“I am Keiko Manako, Hakubodenrei.” He stood almost seven feet tall, and was wearing a dark green jacket and trousers. His right arm was tainted; the skin was dark and rotting, Hinako could tell. “Sadly enough, I have no wish to fight you, Reaper. I will have to take my leave.” He snapped his fingers, and vanished. Hinako slowly closed her eyes as she faded into unconsciousness.

His shirt has the words "Screw life" on it.Bio: He was a lonely child. He kept to himself. It wasn't that he didn't like people he just liked being by himself more and that way he could hear his thoughts without distractions. He's much like Sho Minamimoto but not as drastic. Although he does use weird catchphrases. He liked training the art of the ninja and was quite skilled with the sword. One day he was was training with another boy with what had appeared to be fake swords but when the other boy lunged at him he got killed right on the spot. Now he's playing the Reaper's Game to find out who switched the swords and to get his life back or become a reaper.Powers in the UG: He can use his sword to kill noise and can also create shurikens to throw at his opponents. Umbra
Frohawk, I'll handle the Noise. Riku, I kinda like it, and I'll consider the concept. Can't promise I'll use Saito as he is right now, but a Player that manifests their powers through a sword, instead of using their Pins... Interesting enough. I'm not a fan of "ultimate moves", but consider your character accepted for now.

fenrir
Wow, finally a TWEWY fic! Though in the second prologue in the first paragraph, at the last sentence or so, shouldn't it be forever? Not for ever. Name: Takashi KiryuAge: 16Class: ReaperAppearance: Black hair reaching down to his cheeks, yellow feral eyes. He wears a black hoodie and wears dark green cargo pants. His hoodie has a picture of a wolf howling to the moon.Bio: Takashi is a bit of a sadist. He enjoys making people's lives miserable, even his families. His only companion in life was his dog, an Australian Shepard by the name of Dogmeat(See if you can find the reference ;D). While on a hike with Dogmeat around several hills, Takashi tripped and rolled down the hill, only to be impaled by several rocks in the head. From there, he entered the Reapers game. He survived and actually won. Once reborn he found out Dogmeat died as well, and was saddened, that's when Sho Minamimoto offered him a chance to become a Reaper. He accepted and joined as a Harrier Reaper, and is now out to make the Player's lives miserably.Powers in the UG: He shows exceptional skill in Tuning. He prefers to not fight directly, and instead create a "pack" of strengthened Noise to fight for him. He can strengthen the Noise in different ways, if he's angry the Noise gain increased strength, if he's happy the Noise loss power, if he's in his "sadist" mode the Noise gain an all around boost. If he wants to toy around with the players, the Noise gains a speed boost. I hope that's okay.

bury the year
Name: Hinako Awase (泡瀬日菜子, Awase Hinako)Apparent Age: 20Class: ReaperAppearance: Short black hair, tied back in a loose bun with a good portion hanging over her eyes. Rather plain clothing, usually a short-sleeved shirt with a long skirt. She's also rather petite in stature.Personality: Hinako's very morose, and likes to mope around a lot, quietly doing her work in the background. Something bad must've happened to her in life, for she rarely talks, and when she does, it's usually a bad sign in the form of a Cassandra-esque observation. However, she's smarter than she looks; she's just not too hip on showing it.Background: (You get to do this part. I'm sure you could figure out something perfect for Hinako-chan.)Abilities: It'd be fun if she had a Cantus form (Lutrina Cantus? Lutrina = otter); a little-ish girl being a higher-up? However, it's fine if she isn't. Even if not, Hinako has a natural aptitude for water-themed Noise (Dixiefrogs, Pop Penguins, Mad Jellies, etc.) and sneak attacking. She's very devious. bury the year
An excellent chapter. Just what I'd expect from a writer of your caliber.
