if this is on GIMP:

 

WHen you open the star along the side there is a toolbar with the layers on. Right click the star layer and click 'Add alpha channel'.

Then render it and it should have a grey and white line background. THat means there is no BG which means its rendered.

then copya dn paste it on whatever and viola, rendered.

this is what i did, i selected what i wanted rendered the i added alpha channle then i pressed ctrl+i to select every thing els, then i inverted it and pressed delte and it gave me the transparent background. then i saved it and ta da! black!
