Ryo, unlike many of the other students, was absorbed by Crowler's lesson. Pharaoh Hyjan VIII had been quite a mystery to him, one of the many subjects he wouldn't mind learning. He finished the exercise and raised his hand.

"Sir... there are theories that Hyjan himself possesed the Millenium Eye, and there is evidence to support it, the most famous being a stone carving of the Pharaoh, with a shiny eye. What's your view?"

The Egyptian Gods are one-of-a-kind all-powerful cards created by Maximillion Pegasus, who modeled them after three Ancient Egypt divine beasts whose likenesses surround the Millennium Puzzle on the stone tablet said to hold the memories of the nameless Pharaoh. When Pegasus was making these cards, everyone involved in the "Egyptian God Card Project" were attacked by the spirits of the Egyptian God Monsters, so Pegasus decided to create the cards on his own, under the protection of his Millennium Eye. When Pegasus finished the art-work on the prototypes, he was having a nightmare about the cards attacking him. Shadi told Pegasus that he had angered the Egyptian Gods. Pegasus woke up injured after this "nightmare". So he decided that these cards were too powerful to be mass-produced, and had Ishizu bury the prototypes in in the Pharaoh's tomb. The wielder of these great cards is able to acquire the title of "Duel King," but in the wrong hands, they are capable of causing legitimate injury or even death.

"Fascinating..." Ryo said to himself. "To think the spirits of the Gods were resurrected through those cards."

Ryo was reading when suddenly he heard shouting. He turned to find Liang blushing, hiding under a Desk. He returned back to his book.

While Exodia's primary purpose is to declare an automatic win through having all five pieces, there have been other methods to using Exodia. The first of these was Exodia Necross, which is considered to be a zombie version of Exodia, and possessing near-invulnerability of the Anime Exodia (in the anime, it is said that Exodia, once summoned, is unstoppable). The next such incarnation was Exodius the Forbidden Lord, which provided an alternate method of winning with Exodia.

Exodia the Forbidden One

Right Arm of the Forbidden One

Left Arm of the Forbidden One

Right Leg of the Forbidden One

Left Leg of the Forbidden One

If you have all five of the above in your hand you automatically win the duel.

I knew that, Ryo thought.

He looked up and saw Matt looking at him. He heard Matt mention the Sacred Beasts. He turned to a previous page and tossed the book to him.

The Shadow Riders sought to acquire the Spirit Keys and revive the Sacred Beasts. In order to open the gate, a strong dueling presence is required; if the keys are stolen and placed in the gate, (as attempted by Don Zaloog (character)) for example, nothing will occur. To meet the challenge of the Shadow Riders, seven of Duel Academy's finest duelists were selected, these duelists were Jaden Yuki, Zane Truesdale, Chazz Princeton, Alexis Rhodes, Bastion Misawa, Lyman Banner and Vellian Crowler, and although the Shadow Riders were defeated, Kagemaru managed to awaken the Sacred Beasts because of the dueling energy released from the duels. In exchange for freeing them from imprisonment, the Sacred Beasts slowly returned Kagemaru to a youthful state, empowering him with the energy sapped from Duel Monster spirits, but Jaden Yuki's interference resulted in the man's downfall. They were thus locked away once more.
