The power Cyrus... it will be unparalleled.” “That is exactly your problem,” Cyrus replied lightly, standing up and crossing to the expansive window that provided a panoramic view of Sunyshore City, “All that limits our potential is the power of our imagination.” “You believe your other failed projects to be greater than mine.” “In short, yes. But that is a topic to discuss another time. You and I Giovanni, we are two sides to the same coin. You fight for power and personal gain, while I fight for balance and reason. Together we can reshape this world however we wish.” “It is agreed then,” Giovanni continued, standing up also and extending a hand, “The Genetic Fusion Project shall begin at once!”

Chapter OneAmnesia “Light...” he thought quietly, “Bright light...” The young boy blinked in pain at the dappled rays distorting his vision. He rolled over on the damp grass and pushed himself to his feet. “Where am I..?” A rolling grassy plain coupled with a small patch of woodland met his sight. Suddenly a small, pus green creature, the shape of a mushroom, with dark green spots appeared from the undergrowth. “Shroo-mish, Shroo-mish, Shroo-mish...” a high-pitched voice squeaked. “It’s TALKING!?” the boy yelped in astonishment. His surprise was pushed to further extremes when a turquoise boar with a flower on its back began charging towards him. “Ivysaur, Ivysaur! Saur!” it roared with an expression that could only be described as anger. “Ah!” he screamed, spinning around and sprinting away like a hare from a fox. The chase continued for several minutes, across grass, gravel, sand, and concrete, past rivers, ponds and lagoons. Then, in the distance, a large building began growing in size as it drew closer. It looked modern, with its mustard yellow walls and wind turbine extending out of the roof. “Help!” the boy cried as he began to pant and breath heavily, “Help!” A short, stocky old man with a pointed face and matted grey hair ran out from the building, his white lab coat tails flying out behind. “What’s going on here?!” he shouted in a sharp and assertive tone. “I’m being chased!” the boy cried hysterically. All of a sudden, a white blur of movement streaked past both the man and the young boy and struck into Ivysaur. “Absol, Ab-sol! Sol!” it roared in a deep throaty voice. The creature was a bright white wolf, with a face as dark as midnight and a curious, massive claw extending from the right side of its mouth. The boy stopped and turned around to watch. Was this creature, this Absol, talking to Ivysaur? “Wow,” the man said with a smile, “I’ve been having trouble with Absol not being able to make any friends for weeks now, and here he comes to stop Ivysaur and protect you of his own free will.” “I’m afraid...” the boy stammered as he watched the two creatures. “There’s no need to be now,” he replied soothingly, “My name is Professor Oak. What are you doing out here in my Pokemon Sanctuary?” “Pokemon, what are Pokemon?” “Our world is full of creatures called Pokemon. You’re at least four years old now, how come you don’t know that?” “I... don’t know...” “I wonder... You may have lost your memory my boy. But it seems that you have made a new and unexpected friend today.” The boy found Absol had wandered over silently and had begun nuzzling at his weak and weary legs. “Absol...” it whispered peacefully. “Like I said earlier, this Absol has had trouble making friends and integrating itself ever since it arrived at my Sanctuary from the wild. I would like you to stay with me and help me keep it company. I might be able to help you regain your memory.” He was overcome with gratitude at this generous offer. “But... I don’t even know my name.” “That’s ok. For the moment I will name you after my son, Brandon.” Over the following years, Professor Oak had taken Brandon under his wings and taught him all he knew about the world of Pokemon; all about the different regions and the Pokemon that are unique to them, all about the different contests that the people enter into with their Pokemon and all about training Pokemon of his own. Brandon’s relationship with Absol had also greatly developed. They rarely spent any length of time apart, often wandering deep into the Pokemon Sanctuary to relax, train and play together. Martial arts and fighting type Pokemon had also begun to interest him greatly. One of his favourite pass times was to watch and mimic the training of the enormous groups of Machoke that the Professor kept in his Sanctuary. He decided that when he travelled, he would build the ultimate team of fighting Pokemon along with Absol. Six years passed, until it was time for Brandon to begin his own journey and seek his true calling. He awoke on a sunny, Saturday morning with the sound of birds chirruping from the trees, his excitement radiating from him like a warm summer breeze. Everything he believed he would need had been packed neatly in a large rucksack for over a week. “It’s a beautiful day for a life changing journey, eh Absol?” “Sol!” his Pokemon replied with a rare smile. They both bounded downstairs, nearly tripping each other up as they sprinted for the breakfast table. “Morning Professor!” Brandon yelled in a slightly strangled voice, “Yes, chocolate chip pancakes and maple syrup!” “I thought you deserved a treat on today of all days.” Professor Oak replied with a wide smile, “You had better eat quickly though, if you wish to have first choice of your starting Pokemon.” Brandon choked through an enormous mouthful of his breakfast. “Can’t I take Absol with me?” he asked in worried disbelief. The Professor chuckled slightly. “Of course you can,” he said soothingly, “But it is customary to give a new trainer a baby Pokemon to begin their journey with. Have you given any thought to your choice?” “Well, since the starting Pokemon from all the regions are available here now, I’ve narrowed it down to two choices; Chimchar and Torchic.” Brandon mumbled through a mouthful of syrup. “Why am I not surprised?” Professor Oak sighed, “I take it you chose them because of what they evolve into?” “Of course!” “Well eat up and then I can introduce you to them.” Twenty minutes later, when all the dishes were empty and clean, Professor Oak took Brandon through to the predominantly metal laboratory. The vials, test tubes and cylinders that littered the numerous wooden tables were nothing compared to the hundreds of red and white, spherical pokeballs that lined the shelved walls. They were all collections from trainers who had begun their journey in Pallet Town many years before. Twelve pokeballs had been set out separately that morning. They contained the baby Pokemon that trainers would use on their journeys. Professor Oak walked over to the worktop and picked up two of the pokeballs. “Come on out Torchic and Chimchar!” The first Pokemon was a small, bright orange bird with tufts of yellow feathers on its head, neck and wrists. It seemed fairly timid, and it ran to hide behind the Professor when it noticed Brandon and Absol. The second Pokemon was a vivid red monkey with a flaming tail that exuded more heat than a roaring bonfire. When it saw Brandon and Absol, it grinned broadly and did an energetic back flip. Brandon was a little taken aback at the scared reaction of the Torchic. “He’s a timid little fellow isn’t he?” “I’m afraid so...” the Professor replied, “He was separated from his mother early and never properly learned to defend himself.” Bending down, Brandon offered a hand slowly to the little bird. “Hey little guy... I’m not going to hurt you... My name’s Brandon.” The Torchic began to creep out very cautiously, but when it spotted Absol standing beside Brandon it fired several orbs of fire at him before running back to its hiding place. “Ow, that’s hot!” Brandon exclaimed with a small frown, “I guess he and I weren’t meant to be partners. What about you little fellow?” he asked Chimchar, his arm extended as an invitation. Chimchar responded by bounding up his arm and jumping about happily on Brandon’s shoulders. “I’ll take that as an all around yes,” he laughed, “You just have to clear it with someone else first...” He lowered Chimchar down to Absol’s head height. The wolf Pokemon sniffed around Chimchar’s extremities for several seconds. “Sol...” he said with a smile. “That’s good enough for me!” Brandon smiled, “Welcome to the team Chimchar!” “Chim, Chim-chimchar!” “This is good,” Professor Oak said, “It seems you have a strong, natural connection with Chimchar. However, there is one thing you should know, he hates being cooped up in his pokeball.” “Like Ash’s Pikachu? That’s fine with me. Absol has been the same way for years.” “Absol.” “Ha-ha, that’s true,” the Professor agreed, “I have some other things to give you. Here is the latest version of the Pokedex. It will automatically record data on every Pokemon you see as well as tell you what moves your Pokemon know and how strong they currently are.” Brandon jumped at the chance to gauge his Pokemon’s strength. “Let’s see then,” he said excitedly, “What does it say about you Absol?” A high-pitched, male and monotonous voice started speaking as the computer scanned Absol. “Absol, the wolf Pokemon, it senses coming disasters and appears before people only to warn them of impending danger. Level seventeen, known moves; Me First, Quick Attack, Dark Pulse and Razor Wind.” “Wow... that’s an impressive set of techniques Absol. They will be invaluable against the Pewter Gym.” Absol gave a look of happy indifference. “Sol.” “Now for you Chimchar,” Brandon said. “Chimchar, the chimp Pokemon, it agilely scales sheer cliffs to live atop craggy mountains. Its fire is put out when it sleeps. Level nine, known moves; Double Kick, Ember, Scratch, Taunt.” “Wow, it looks like I have some powerful Pokemon.” Professor Oak simply smiled at Brandon’s enthusiasm. “Here is Chimchar’s pokeball, Absol’s you already have, and here are four empty ones to fill out the rest of your team.” “Thank you Professor...” Brandon said, suddenly feeling very serious and grateful “For everything that you’ve done ever since I lost my memory.” “Your welcome son,” Professor Oak replied with a knowing smile, “But there really is no reason to thank me. I only did what any decent person would have done in the same situation.” “But you still could have chosen to not help me and you did, and for that I’m grateful.” Later that day, after Brandon had stocked up on supplies of potions and status healers at the local poke mart, he began the unbearable walk away from Pallet Town, his home for the past six years. His feelings were mixed and confused. On the one hand he was ecstatic to be out exploring the world, discovering all the wondrous sights that he only knew of from dreams and imagination. However, he would miss Professor Oak and all his Pokemon friends at the Sanctuary. From his brief glance downwards, he could tell that Absol’s thoughts were exactly the same. Chimchar on the other hand simply seemed as giddy as a young toddler. “Come on guys. I would like to reach Pewter City within the next couple of days, which means we can’t linger for too long. We’ll find a place to train on the way through the forest” “Absol.” “Chim...char.” the monkey exclaimed, doing another back flip. The trio walked for nearly two hours and a considerable distance into the forest before stopping by a large group of rocks and trees. They were conveniently placed to shelter them from the now chill wind that was filtering through the forest. “This will do nicely. Chimchar, are you ready to do some training?” “Chim,” he said nodding. “Alright, you’re going to spar with Absol. I will be giving you instructions. Now Absol has had considerable battle experience so it will be hard. I want you to give it all you’ve got!” “Chim!” Moments later, the two Pokemon were facing each other across an arena sized stretch of grass. Absol looked cool, calm and collected while Chimchar face was completely screwed up in concentration. “Alright Chimchar, use Taunt!” Chimchar span around and showed his behind to Absol. The wolf gave Chimchar a ferocious stare and loosed a mighty Dark Pulse. “Jump over it to dodge then use Scratch!” Chimchar leapt over the blast, claws outstretched, aiming to land right on top of his opponent. Absol darted to the side like lightning, leaving the monkey swiping nothing but air. He then brought his mouth claw crashing downwards, expelling a powerful Razor Wind. “Block the attack with Ember!” The monkey shot a dozen orbs of bright red flame at the oncoming sickle of white energy. However, Absol’s attack was just two strong and it collided with Chimchar, creating a large explosion. “Chimchar, are you alright?!” “Absol...” the wolf sighed. He was clearly unimpressed by Chimchar’s performance. Brandon walked over to the practically unconscious monkey and lifted him up tenderly. “Hey... Good job buddy. That was impressive for your first battle. We’ll rest for an hour or so then work on some of your fighting type attacks.” As he placed Chimchar on his large rucksack to rest, he turned to his other Pokemon. “Absol, do you think you can remember this place?” “Sol,” he replied nodding slowly. “Feel free to get some exercise then while Chimchar rests.” “Absol!” he yelled with a smile before bouncing off into the forest.
Later that day, when Chimchar had regained his strength, they returned to training. This time it was Brandon that faced Chimchar as Absol had yet to return. “Alright, I want you to come at me using every fighting technique you know, got it?” “Chim!” “Well then... what are you waiting for?” Chimchar sprang forwards and attacked with a swift Double Kick. Brandon simply stepped to the side and avoided it easily. Quickly finding its footing, Chimchar’s fist became encased by a ball of blue energy. So he had learned Mach Punch during his battle with Absol? The strike collided with Brandon’s arm, sending him careering backwards from the force. “That’s impressive Chimchar,” Brandon wheezed, “You obviously have a lot of power. Next let’s see some speed!” His Pokemon answered with a flurry of fast kicks. None were particularly powerful but every one of them connected, which was what Brandon had hoped for. “Now,” he yelled, eyes blazing, “Combine the two! Throw everything you felt at me now!” Chimchar leapt high into the air, aiming to land a Mach Punch right on top of Brandon, but at the last second, he threw his waste up and struck with a Double Kick. “Chimchar!” the monkey cried happily. “He is doing well,” Brandon thought with a smile. They continued sparring for a good ten minutes, Brandon remaining on the defensive and Chimchar steadily gaining confidence. The abrupt return of Absol caused the pair to collapse into two piles, puffing, panting and laughing. “That was impressive Chimchar. Why don’t we see how much your strength has grown from those battles?” He fished out his Pokedex from the depths of his bag and flicked it on. “Chimchar, the chimp Pokemon, it agilely scales sheer cliffs to live atop craggy mountains. Its fire is put out when it sleeps. Level twelve, known moves; Double Kick, Ember, Scratch, Taunt, Mach Punch.” “That pathetic little wimp isn’t fit to lick my boots!” a malicious, shallow voice called from nearby. Brandon stood up quickly, feeling furious on behalf of his Pokemon. “Show yourself!” A tall, lanky figure with unkempt black hair walked out from behind one of the rocks next to his angry looking Raticate. “The name is Tyler... Tyler Bennet. I’m a Pokemon trainer and a weak trainer like you will fall before my power.” “Are you challenging me to a battle?” Brandon asked through gritted teeth. “You bet your ass I am!” This Tyler was obviously a bit of an unpleasant character. “I’ll get rid of him quickly,” he thought to himself furiously. “Absol... Fancy a challenge? Chimchar cannot as his training has drained his strength.” “Sol.” Absol said with obvious anger. It was good to hear that Absol was protective of Chimchar as well. “Raticate! Front and centre!” “Raticate!” it yelled in a screeching tone. “Polite people first,” Brandon snarled, “Absol, Dark Pulse!” Absol jumped high into the air and loosed a stream of black energy from his mouth. It crashed into the opposing Raticate with a mighty blast. “Block it with Super Fang!” Tyler shouted. A bright, white light began emanating from within the darkness of the attack. Soon after, Raticate reappeared, apparently, unharmed. He had blocked Absol’s attack using his teeth. “Now counter with Hyper Fang!” Raticate charged forward, his massive front teeth glowing white once more. “Absol, use Me First!” Brandon roared. Glowing white for a second, Absol darted forwards, landing a powerful, full on body blow before Raticate could finish his attack. “Me First is a special attack that allows me to land a blow before you and deals double the damage that your attack would have dealt. Since you attacked with Hyper Fang, I believe we have just won.” And sure enough, Raticate collapsed and did not get up again. “You come here, insult my Pokemon, patronise my skills as a trainer. I hope you learned a lesson in modesty, as you have just been beaten by a trainer less than a day out on his journey.” Tyler was silent for a moment before recalling Raticate and running off, letting out a strangled wail. Brandon sat down on the rocks with a deep sigh. Absol wandered up to him slowly. “Nice job buddy, you battled well. You too Chimchar, you trained hard. I think we’ll call it a night. See you both in the morning.” “Sol.” “Chim.”

Chapter TwoA Gym Battle The early morning sun was low over the tree-lined horizon when Brandon awoke from his deep sleep. He found Chimchar nestled in a small hole underneath his arms and Absol curled up, breathing contentedly, near his head. Taking a look at his watch, Brandon was surprised to find that it wasn’t even seven o’clock yet as he normally slept very late. He shook both his Pokemon awake slowly after ten minutes of lying watching the sun. “Come on guys. It’s time to get moving.” Chimchar was perfectly happy to be woken at such an early time but Absol was used to a similar sleep pattern to Brandon, meaning he was little irritable. The trio continued on their walk through Route One for most of the morning, until a large group of buildings began to materialise on the horizon. They had made it to Viridian City. “It’s certainly a lot bigger than Pallet Town,” Brandon commented in awe at the enormous skyscrapers. Due to the Professor having such a busy career, Brandon and Absol had never been out of Pallet Town. “Sol...” Absol answered in a similarly fascinated tone. “Chim...char...” Continuing through the city, the group arrived at the Pokemon Centre just in time for lunch. “Alright, the two of you need to return to your pokeballs so Nurse Joy can give you a check up.” Absol grumbled slightly at this but didn’t resist the red beam of light that surrounded him. Chimchar on the other hand exhaled a strangled, outraged yelp as Brandon tried to return him to his pokeball. “Come on Chimchar! It’s not going to be for very long!” Brandon sighed. “Chim, Chimchar!” his Pokemon shouted. “Ok, ok... I’ll ask if she can take a look at you outside of your pokeball,” he groaned in exasperation. “Nurse Joy?” he said striding up to the counter. An attractive, pink-haired woman wearing the white outfit of a doctor turned around with a wide, infectious smile. “Hi there, what can I do for you?” she asked. “My Chimchar is a little fussy. Would you mind giving him a check up without him being in his pokeball?” Brandon stammered, a little taken aback by her beauty. She smiled again. “Sure, I deal with Pokemon like that all the time.” “Thanks Nurse Joy. Now, I don’t want you to cause Nurse Joy here any trouble. Ok Chimchar?” “Chimchar!” the monkey cheered with a smile. “Your Pokemon should be checked up and healed by about one o’clock.” “Thanks Nurse Joy.” While he waited for his Pokemon to get healed, Brandon headed for the local park and bought a chilli dog from one of the many hot dog stands. Sitting down on one of the wooden benches, he took in the unique scenery. The park was a beautiful place. A deep blue stream trickled through the centre of the area with many tall maple and oak trees dotting the grassy terrain. The skyline was overshadowed by the tall skyscrapers of Viridian City’s town centre, the grey metal and glass greatly contrasting with the green leaves of the trees. “Do you mind if I sit here?” a young boy’s voice asked, breaking the silence. Brandon jumped slightly at the interruption. “N-no, go ahead!” “Sorry if I startled you...” the boy chuckled lightly. He was quite a tall, handsome young man with brilliant blue eyes and messy brown hair, “My name is Alan, a just starting Pokemon trainer.” “Really?” Brandon asked, “So am I. I began from Pallet Town yesterday morning.” “I know,” replied Alan, “I was entering Professor Oak’s laboratory just as you were leaving the town” He was a little confused by this. “How come I have never seen you before then? I lived in Pallet Town for six years with Professor Oak.” “That’s because I arrived by boat from the Hoenn region a little over two days ago,” Alan admitted, “I was originally supposed to leave from Littleroot Town but I have always wanted to meet Professor Oak. Professor Birch then arranged for me to travel to Pallet Town.” “Fair enough,” Brandon laughed, “So how has your progress been so far?” Alan was obviously waiting to be asked this. “Nothing short of excellent!” he answered excitedly, almost arrogantly, “I’ve already caught two new Pokemon and Torchic has won me two battles already!” “That’s impressive work for less than a day... would you mind showing me the Pokemon that you’ve caught?” “Of course,” Alan replied, “Come on out guys!” He threw three pokeballs up in the air, releasing the Torchic from the Professor’s lab, a harsh-looking, brown Spearow and a two-headed, ostrich like creature that was his Doduo. “Say hello to Brandon.” “Spear-ow!” “Doduo!” “Torchic-chic!” Torchic called with much more confidence than Brandon remembered. “You must have really connected with this little guy,” Brandon commented as he scratched Torchic behind the ears, “He was too scared to even come near me when I first met him.” “It wasn’t hard. The two of us just naturally got along well. What about you, how are you progressing?” Not being totally sure how this stranger would react to someone of a lower calibre than himself, Brandon chose his words carefully. “I’ve had a close relationship with an Absol from Professor Oak’s Sanctuary ever since I can remember. He let me take Absol with me as well as choosing my Chimchar. I’ve won one battle against an obnoxious trainer that blind-sided me but I haven’t actually caught anything.” “Well it sounds like you are making good progress yourself! Would you like to battle?” “Normally I wouldn’t pass up an opportunity like this, but my Pokemon are away being healed at the moment and I have to go and collect them. Hopefully we’ll run into each other again.” Brandon sighed, standing up to leave. “Don’t worry about it. I’m heading towards Pewter City to start the Kanto Gym Challenge. I’ll maybe see you along the way.” Alan replied. “Maybe, it was nice meeting you Alan.” Ten minutes later, when Brandon re-entered the Pokemon Centre he saw a tall, dark-skinned man with spiky brown hair and attire, down on one knee, talking animatedly to Nurse Joy. She was wearing an embarrassed grin and laughing jovially. There was only one man that anyone knew who could cause Nurse Joy such embarrassment. Brandon walked over to the pair. “Hi,” he smiled, “You’re Brock, right?”
Evidently a little taken aback by a stranger knowing his name, Brock stood up curiously. “How do you know me?” he asked slowly. “Ah... Hello Brandon,” Nurse Joy smiled, “I will just go and retrieve your Pokemon.” “Thanks Nurse Joy,” Brandon replied. He then turned around to address Brock, “My stepfather spoke very highly of you, saying you were one of the most skilled breeders he had ever met.” “Who is your stepfather?” Brock asked less cautiously. “Professor Samuel Oak.” He looked fairly startled at this admission. “Professor Oak adopted you? I didn’t think a celebrity like him could afford the time or the effort.” Feeling a little embarrassed at such a critical viewpoint, Brandon bowed his head very slightly. “It’s quite complicated...” he said quietly. Surprisingly, Brock smiled broadly. “I’m actually just glad that the Professor is still safe.” Now it was Brandon’s turn to feel confused and cautious. “What do you mean? Is my Father in some kind of danger?” “Don’t you keep up with the news?” Brock asked sceptically. “No.” Brock then began rummaging around in his pockets and backpack for several minutes until he pulled out a sophisticated looking mobile phone. Flicking it on, a news bulletin immediately popped up. “The search continues for master Pokemon trainer, Ash Ketchum and many of his former comrades. The renowned trainer, now aged nineteen was abducted from his hotel room in Petalburgh City almost a month ago, with former companions May and Dawn disappearing soon after. It is unclear who the culprits may be but evidence points to the apparently disbanded crime syndicates, Teams Rocket and Galactic.” “At first I didn’t believe it,” Brock said quietly as he put the phone back in his pocket, “I just thought Ash had disappeared for some time to himself. But then I received a call from my family. Apparently my brothers have spotted some unfamiliar, disturbing looking figures in the neighbourhood. I’m heading home to check it out. I still haven’t asked you your name have I?” “It’s Brandon...” he replied shortly. The news of these abductions had aroused a great deal of apprehension in him. Nurse Joy then appeared behind him with Absol’s pokeball and Chimchar on her shoulder. “They are both in perfect health,” she said with that familiar, infectious smile. “Thanks Nurse Joy. Are you feeling better Chimchar?” Brandon asked absently. “Chimchar!” “I wouldn’t worry too much,” Brock said soothingly, “When Professor Oak had to babysit us, he had to deal with a lot more.” “I appreciate that,” Brandon murmured slowly, “Say Brock. I really respect your opinion as a battler and a trainer, would you mind battling with me?” He thought about it for a moment. “Sure, I can spare an hour or so. Does the park sound like an adequate arena?” “Definitely, thanks Brock!” Sometime later, the two trainers stood across from one another in the park where Brandon had met Alan. He was feeling rather nervous about this battle. Brock was one of the strongest trainers in the world, having been the Pewter City gym leader, a respected breeder and a companion of champion Ash. “I’d like this to be a one on one battle if that’s alright.” “Sure,” Brock answered, “I’m not fussy. Toxicroak, come on out!” A large, purple, humanoid Pokemon appeared on the field with massive, poisonous talons protruding from its wrists and a fluid sac that most likely contained poison underneath its chin. “Wow... I’ve always wanted to see a Toxicroak,” Brandon whispered, “Let’s see what Dexter has to say.” “Toxicroak, the toxic mouth Pokemon, its knuckle claws secrete a toxin so vile that even a scratch could prove fatal.” This Pokemon certainly sounded dangerous at the best of times. He would have to be careful. “Chimchar, it’s time to fight!” “Chimchar!” “Listen carefully Chimchar, your opponent is much stronger than you,” Brandon called firmly, “Take none of its attacks head on, your speed is your ally in this fight.” “Chim!” he replied, nodding. Brock just waited silently, his expression totally unreadable. “Chimchar, use Mach Punch!” Brandon shouted. The Pokemon charged forward, his fist glowing blue with power. “Toxicroak, defend with Brick Break!” His Pokemon’s hand glowed white as he brought it crashing down to block Chimchar’s attack. The collision, while not bothering Toxicroak terribly, caused Chimchar to fly backwards and land quite hard. Brandon was astonished. “His Pokemon is so fast! Chimchar, use Ember!” Dozens of small orbs of fire shot towards Toxicroak. “Use Poison Sting,” Brock yelled. Toxicroak fired hundreds of miniature purple needles back at Chimchar, blocking every single one of his blasts. “Follow up with a Double Kick!” Chimchar sprang forward at a surprising and impressive speed, landing two powerful blows on Toxicroak’s chest, propelling it a considerable distance backwards. His opponent smiled at him lightly. “Your Chimchar is impressive for such an early stage of your journey,” Brock commented slowly, “Unfortunately I have a reputation to uphold. Toxicroak, use Earthquake!” The Pokemon leapt high into the air and slammed its fist into the ground, sending a shockwave of power rippling throughout the park. “Follow through with a Focus Blast!” Toxicroak conjured an orb of blue energy in between its hands that it then shot towards Chimchar. The collision was explosive and powerful. Chimchar was catapulted high into the air, screaming in pain. “Chimchar!” Brandon yelled running to catch him as he fell, “Are you alright buddy?” “Chim...” his Pokemon murmured in exhaustion. “Here,” Brandon said, pulling out a Potion, “This spray will make you feel better, although it stings at first.” Chimchar struggled and yelped for a minute as Brandon sprayed him, but eventually relaxed as the healing properties took effect. “Ok buddy, climb back on to my shoulder.” “Chimchar stays out of his pokeball?” Brock asked as he walked over. Brandon nodded. “He doesn’t like being cooped up inside of the pokeball.” “Just like Pikachu...” Brock whispered, “As for our battle, I was very impressed at how quickly your Chimchar has learned to trust you. If you continue this way, you will become a powerful trainer very quickly. Am I right in guessing you are going to be aiming for the Pokemon League at the Indigo Plateau?” “That’s the plan anyway!” “Well then, how would you like to travel with me for a while? It seems as though our paths lead in the same direction.” “It would be my pleasure!” Brandon replied with a grin, “Next stop, Pewter City!”
The jagged roofs of the city were soon replaced by a dense and vivid tree line. They had made it to Viridian Forest. “We have to be quite careful as we enter,” Brock told him while they were on the outskirts of the woodland. “Swarms of Beedrill are known to call this forest their home, and aren’t very friendly to travellers." He stopped suddenly, as though struck by sudden inspiration, "By the way, how did the Professor come to adopt you?” This was one topic of conversation Brandon would rather have never come up. “When I was four years old, I suffered a case of total amnesia. I awoke in the Pokemon Sanctuary with no knowledge of who I was, where I was or anything about this world. For all I know I could have fallen from the sky.” Brock sunk into a stunned silence at Brandon’s story. “I’m sorry. I’ve never heard a story like that before. Have you managed to remember anything in recent years?” “No...” he sighed. The pair then fell into silence as they began the dark journey through the forest. The woods of Viridian were a veritable breeding ground for bug Pokemon. Swathes of Caterpie, Weedle, Yanma, Nincada and Wurmple were everywhere as they walked. Brock kept remarking and chuckling to himself at how much Misty hated this place. Eventually they stopped for dinner, where they were interrupted by a surprise visitor. “Wow Brock!” Brandon grinned as he slurped a mouthful of his soup, “Professor Oak wasn’t giving you enough credit when he said you were a good cook.” He smiled as he realised that Chimchar and Absol were munching away happily along with Brock’s Toxicroak, his round, deep red, spherical Forretress and his tall, sky blue, finned Swampert. “Let’s take a look at what Dexter says.” “Forretress, the bagworm Pokemon, it is encased in a steel shell. Its peering eyes are all that can be seen of its mysterious innards. Swampert, the mud fish Pokemon, it can swim while towing a large ship. It bashes down foes with a swing of its thick arms.” “It seems like we have similar taste in Pokemon,” Brandon said with a smile. Brock smirked faintly but continued eating. Suddenly, Swampert became very aggressive, swiping at something close to his food. Brandon’s Pokedex beeped as it registered. “Poliwag, the tadpole Pokemon, Its skin is so thin, that its internal organs are visible. It has trouble walking on its newly grown feet.” Laughing heartily, Brock walked over to the large bowl of water Pokemon food. “It seems we have an uninvited guest,” he said, picking up the navy blue, tadpole-shaped newcomer, “Hey there little guy.” The Poliwag began fidgeting and thrashing around hysterically as it tried to free itself from Brock’s grip. “Whoa, what’s wrong with it Brock?” Brandon asked in surprise and vague fear. “If I had to guess, I’d say it just wanted some more food,” laughed Brock as he grabbed a handful from Swampert’s bowl. Poliwag immediately became friendlier but no less animated as it wolfed down the poffins Brock had made. “There we go, much happier now.” Suddenly the Poliwag jumped out of Brock’s arms and made fierce movements towards Chimchar. “Chim?” he said in surprise Poliwag then leapt towards him, hitting Chimchar in the face with its tail over and over again. “Chimchar!” “That was her Doubleslap. I think Poliwag wants to battle with Chimchar, Brandon,” Brock said with a chuckle, “It’s obviously quite the little fighter.” “You think so?” replied Brandon, not a little surprised, “Do you want to Chimchar?” “Chim-Chimchar!” “Alright,” he shouted, realising how psyched he was that he might catch his first Pokemon. Minutes later, Brandon and Chimchar were facing Poliwag across their makeshift campsite. “Be careful Chimchar. Just remember, you have a type disadvantage.” Their opponent then charged once again, aiming for another Doubleslap. “Get in there first Chimchar, use Mach Punch!” Charging in like lightning, Chimchar landed a crushing blow that sent Poliwag sailing backwards. She landed elegantly before firing a number of absurdly quick bubbles at Chimchar. “That’s her Bubble attack, you have to dodge!” Unfortunately, Chimchar wasn’t fast enough and received major damage from the blow. “Hang in there buddy and strike back with a Double Kick!” Shaking off his dizziness, he leapt forward and landed two mighty hits on Poliwag. Now it was Poliwag’s turn to feel exhausted. She swayed and span on the spot before managing to loose a powerful Water Gun. Fortunately, it was easy to dodge due to Poliwag’s fatigue. “Finish it up with Scratch!” Brandon shouted. Chimchar charged again and took an enormous swipe at his opponent, knocking her completely unconscious. “Pokeball, go!” The red and white sphere began to shake and blink as Poliwag disappeared inside it. “Come on,” Brandon encouraged, “Come on!” Eventually it stopped. “Alright!” cheered Brandon, “I caught Poliwag!” “Nice job Brandon,” Brock applauded, “You’ll need her help when you face my brother at the Pewter Gym.” “Let’s check out what she knows.” “Poliwag, the tadpole Pokemon, Its skin is so thin, that its internal organs are visible. It has trouble walking on its newly grown feet. Level twelve, known moves; Water Gun, Bubble, Doubleslap and Hypnosis.” “You were right about her being useful against rock types,” Brandon smiled. “We had better get moving if we want to reach Pewter City by nightfall. According to the map and my memory, we have around a three hour walk ahead of us.”
As night began to descend on the travellers, Pewter City’s iconic, solid stone buildings appeared on the horizon. Brandon spotted a number of landmarks; the Pewter City museum, Mount Moon and the titanic boulder that was the Pewter Gym. A series of quarries and deep mines dotted the towns outskirts. The selling of the robust and rather beautiful stone was the City’s main source of income. “Wow...” Brandon gasped as he stared at the flickering, neon lights and scenery, “I really like this town.” “Chim...char...” the monkey gasped in equal admiration. “Yeah, there’s no place like home. Come on, it’s only a short walk to my house.” “By the way Brock, I was wondering how many of your numerous brothers and sisters still live at home.” “Actually, my youngest brother has just recently left to begin a journey of his own. He took a Geodude that my father caught for him.” “So it’s just Forrest then,” Brandon sighed, failing to hide his disappointment. He had always wondered what it would be like to have a proper large family. Brock obviously sensed this and fell silent. Ten minutes later, they were standing outside of a sky blue, detached bungalow that seemed to be in impressive shape considering the number of people that had lived in it over the years. After several knocks from Brock, a young man who looked almost exactly like him answered. He was a head shorter than Brock and his hair and skin were of lighter colours. “Brock, it’s great to see you!” he exclaimed as he hugged his big brother, “It’s a shame you didn’t arrive yesterday. Adrian was really psyched to be heading for the Johto region.” “That’s good to hear Forrest,” Brock replied with a smile, “Where are mom and dad at this moment?” “The last time I heard from them, they were on Red Rock Isle in the Whirl Islands. And who might I ask is this?” “Oh sorry,” Brock chuckled, “This is Brandon, Professor Oak’s adopted son and his partner, Chimchar. He’s come looking for a battle with you.” Forrest’s eyes immediately lit up in anticipation. This was one trainer who definitely loved to battle. “I’ve actually just begun my journey, so I’m not sure how much of a fight I’ll put up.” “If you’ve befriended Brock this quickly then you’re either very, very good or very, very bad.” “Uh... thank you?” The young gym leader laughed heartily at Brandon’s reaction. “Come on inside and have something to eat. We had better let Brock cook though.” The following day dawned bright and peaceful. Brandon had spent a long evening training an enthusiastic Poliwag after a sumptuous steak dinner with Brock and Forrest. He was relatively confident that his first capture could hold her own in battle now. “Alright Brandon, how are you feeling this morning?” Brock asked outside the house. “Nervous in a word...” he whispered. “Chimchar...” “Don’t worry too much. Everyone gets nervous before their first official match.” The Pewter gym was, conveniently, just across the street from Forrest’s home so they arrived at the arena and managed to set up the lighting within minutes. Brock had offered to act as official judge of the battle. “This battle between the gym leader, Forrest and Brandon Oak of Pallet Town will be a three on three elimination with no time limit. In addition only the challenger will be allowed to make substitutions, do you understand?” “Yes,” replied Brandon. “Of course,” said Forrest, “I’ll pick first. Rhyhorn, it’s time!” A massive, rhino shaped creature with deep grey skin that was more solid than rock appeared on the field. “Horn!” “Wow, a Rhyhorn. Let’s see what the Pokedex says.” “Rhyhorn, the rhino spikes Pokemon, its body is clad in a thick hide, and its tackle can topple buildings. Unfortunately, it is not smart.” “Ok then. Let’s get started, Poliwag, it’s time for battle!” The now much calmer Poliwag leapt lightly onto the field. “Begin!” “Rhyhorn, use Earthquake!” The enormous Pokemon jumped surprisingly high for such a heavy creature, and sent out a series of bone-shattering tremors as it landed. This knocked Poliwag on her back. “Follow it up with Horn Attack!” The savage blow from the glowing horn sent Poliwag sailing to the outer limits of the arena. “Poliwag, you have to stay strong!” Brandon’s Pokemon swayed dizzily for a moment before straightening and looking defiant. “I have to say, that’s one tough little Poliwag,” Forrest complimented, “I’ve seen much bigger and more powerful Pokemon fall much sooner to my Rhyhorn. Use Fury Attack!” Rhyhorn charged again, aiming to land a series of attacks. Without even a command, Poliwag sprang into the air using her tail like Brandon wanted. “Now, Water Gun!” Poliwag shot a powerful jet of water towards Rhyhorn, sending it flying across the arena and causing immense damage. Surprisingly, it managed to stand up. “Water attacks may do four times the damage they normally do, but that won’t stop us! Rhyhorn, use Crunch!” His Pokemon began sprinting towards Poliwag once more, its jaws wide open to use Crunch. “Poliwag, full power Water Gun!” The tadpole took a deep breath before firing a stream of water that was far stronger than the first. When it struck, it stopped Rhyhorn dead in its tracks. Once the splashes had subsided, it became apparent that Rhyhorn hadn’t fared too well. “Rhyhorn is unable to battle! The first round victory goes to Brandon!” “Great job Poliwag!” Brandon yelled with glee as his Pokemon squeaked in happiness, “What did you think Forrest?” Forrest smiled broadly. “I’m impressed. Especially since Poliwag is the Pokemon you caught most recently. I think it’s time for a change of strategy, Crobat, let’s go!” “A Crobat huh...” Brandon murmured as he flicked open Dexter. “Crobat, the winged bat Pokemon, having four wings enables it to fly faster and more quietly. It turns active when the night comes.” Considering his situation for a moment, it was apparent from the sweat on Poliwag’s brow that it needed to rest. “Poliwag, return. That was a fantastic first battle buddy. You and I will go far. Chimchar, you’re going to have to wait for now buddy.” “Chimchar...” his Pokemon sighed. “Absol, it’s time for battle!” “Absol!” he roared as the familiar, shiny white fur coat appeared out on the arena. Forrest had an expression of utter amazement. “An Absol?! I’ve never seen one before and you’ve CAUGHT one already?!” “Actually,” Brandon laughed, feeling a lot more relaxed, “Absol and I have been friends ever since I can remember. He was the first friendly Pokemon I met at my father’s lab.” “That’s cool... Anyway, back to the battle! Crobat, Cross Poison!” The Pokemon began to dive as its wings began to glow a vivid purple. “Absol, use Me First!” The wolf concentrated his energy for a split second before leaping up and landing a strong first strike. “Follow it up with Razor Wind!” The white sickle of energy flew from Absol’s face claw, sending Crobat careering through the air. “Way to go Absol!” However, Forrest was still wearing a victorious smile. The reason for his happiness became apparent when Crobat shook off both attacks as though they were nothing. “Crobat won’t be brought down that easily. Supersonic!” The bat began emanating a piercing, ear-splitting shriek that began to confuse Absol. “Now use Wing Attack!” Diving once more, all four of Crobat’s wings glowed a bright white as they dealt Absol a powerful blow. “Absol, snap out of it!” Brandon shouted. “Crobat, use Cross Poison!” The bat circled back around, landing a double strike with its lower wings, knocking Absol across the arena. “Soool... Absol!” He now stood erect and bold. The confusion had worn off but he was evidently very tired. “Nice recovery, now hit it with a Quick Attack!” Darting forward at an astonishing pace, Absol knocked into Crobat with a might frontal strike. Now it was Crobat’s turn to look completely exhausted. The entire round would come down to one final attack. “Crobat,” Forrest shouted, “Use Wing Attack!” Its wings began to glow white once more as it dived. “Absol, use Dark Pulse!” Brandon yelled. A stream of dark energy flew towards Crobat. “Dodge it!” Unfortunately, the attack was moving too quickly for Crobat and it struck with a large blast. The Pokemon fell from the air and landed on one of the many boulders in the gym, completely unconscious. “Crobat is unable to battle. Victory in the second round goes to the challenger!” “Oh yeah!” Brandon roared in happiness, “Fantastic job Absol!” “Absol,” the Pokemon said with a smile. Forrest looked almost astounded at the skill of his opponent. “You are indeed a powerful opponent Brandon,” he said pulling out his final pokeball, “But this battle is nowhere near over! Steelix, let’s fight!” A titanic Pokemon the shape of a snake with light grey skin as hard as diamonds materialised onto the Arena. It exhaled an ear-splitting roar that shook the foundations of the building. “Holy crap...” Brandon murmured as he flicked open his Pokedex, “I’ve seen large Onix before but nothing compared to this.” “Steelix, the iron snake Pokemon, tempered underground under high pressure and heat, its body is harder than any metal.” His strategy was clear in an instant. “Absol, come back. You can’t damage a Steelix very easily. Chimchar, it’s your show now, are you ready?” “Chim!” he said confidently as he jumped onto the field. “A good choice to face Steelix, though I’m afraid it will do little to help you. Steelix, attack with Rock Tomb!” The snake roared once more, causing an encasing dome of rock to encircle Chimchar and begin to crush him. Brandon felt helpless for a moment before coming to his senses. “Destroy that rock with Mach Punch and Double Kick!” The cracks in the stone glowed white for a moment before shattering into hundreds of smaller pieces. “Now strike back with an Ember!” “Char!” the monkey bellowed as hundreds of red orbs of fire erupted from his mouth. “Steelix, Sandstorm!” Spinning like a gyroscope, a huge twister of sand surrounded Steelix on all sides, protecting it from the fireballs. “Always have a defence against weaknesses. Steelix, Dragonbreath!” A jet of emerald green flame erupted from Steelix’s gigantic mouth which Chimchar only just managed to dodge with a well-timed jump. “Iron Tail!” Beginning to glow a clear white, Steelix swept its tail across the arena, sending a startled Chimchar careering into the wall. “Chimchar, are you alright?!” Brandon yelled in shock. It took a full minute for Chimchar to stand up again from such a powerful attack. “Chim...char!” His tail began to grow in size as the shout grew louder and he seemed to regain his strength. “Is that... Blaze?” asked Brandon in astonishment. Releasing another strangled yell, Chimchar curled up into an enormous, flaming disk that shot towards Steelix, knocking the titanic Pokemon a huge distance across the arena. Panting as he landed, the monkey began to exude an extremely bright light. Forrest gasped in surprise. “It’s evolving, and it just used Flame Wheel!” Chimchar seemed to grow as the light continued. After a couple of seconds, the light dissipated and Chimchar looked totally different. “Monferno!” “Monferno...” Brandon whispered with a smile, “What does Dexter say?” “Monferno, the playful monkey Pokemon, to intimidate attackers, it stretches the fire on its tail to make itself appear bigger.” “This is fantastic! Monferno, don’t let him get up, use Flame Wheel!” With renewed vigour and speed, Brandon’s Pokemon charged once more. Jumping up, he curled once more into a flaming wheel of power that drained the remainder of Steelix’s strength when they clashed. The giant snake collapsed onto the ground once more, completely exhausted. “Steelix is unable to battle! The winner of this round, and the match, is Brandon Oak!” Brock shouted, waving the green flag he held. Forrest sighed a little before smiling meekly. “Steelix, return. Nice job, pal. You did a brilliant job. That was a battle I won’t soon forget Brandon. It’s astonishing that your Pokemon have trusted you so quickly. I’ll give you your Boulder Badge back at the house.” “Well that certainly was exhausting,” Brandon laughed, “Fun, but exhausting.” “You’ll have a chance to rest up tomorrow,” Brock said, “I need to stay at least another day to check for the strange men that have been lurking around. Forrest and I are hoping that they will show up during the Pokemon Contest.” Brandon’s interest was piqued. “A Contest eh..? That sounds like fun! Do you fancy watching a Pokemon Contest guys?” “Absol.” “Monferno!” Chapter 3 will continue over the next week or so. EDITOR ANNOUNCEMENT: If I haven't posted in a couple of days. DON'T WORRY! Brushfire
I'm surprised this has gone un-noticed; it's extremely well-written. Hopefully it'll gain some popularity soon, because it would be a shame if it didn't. I look foward to Chapter 2. :)
Queen-Dragoon

Chapter ThreeMANY MEETINGS The following day dawned grey and overcast. It appeared as though rain was about to fall at any second. Brandon and his Pokemon slept until mid-morning leaving all weariness as a thing of the past. The sweet scent of strawberry pancakes wafted up from the downstairs kitchen causing Brandon, Absol and Monferno to land in a crumpled heap at the bottom of the stairs after attempting to sprint down them at the same time. “Morning you three,” Brock laughed as they picked themselves up with various grumblings, “I take it you slept well?” “Like a baby!” Brandon yelled happily as he caught the scent of Brock’s excellent cooking again, “Smells fantastic Brock!” “Well eat up. We have to be in our seats at the contest stadium within the hour.” The contest stadium was much the same as any other sporting stadium; a round, open topped, coliseum structure made of a light grey, aluminium frame and dark granite. It was one of the biggest in Kanto, standing at an impressive five stories high and a few hundred metres in diameter. As the three friends sat down in the stands, Brandon was admiring his shiny, silver Boulder Badge. “Just looking at this puts me in the mood for a battle!” “Ferno!” Monferno yelled cheerfully. “You sound just like Ash used to...” Brock smiled reminiscently, “Always impatient for his next battle, rushing on to the nearest town... I guess it’s lucky that you have more of a level head than he did at the beginning of his journey.” “Nice to know I can top the master at something,” Brandon grinned. “Shhh!” hissed Forrest, “It’s starting!” The slightly fat announcer was clad in very strange, purple clothing, adorned with various golden buttons and sequence. He swept the violet top hat off of his head and roared into the microphone. “Ladies and Gentlemen hello and welcome to the Pewter City Pokemon Contest! We have a fantastic line-up of talented coordinators for your viewing pleasure today! But first, let me introduce our judges! On the right we have the head judge and Chief of the Pokemon Activities Committee, Mr. Contesta!” “It is my pleasure to witness many feats of skill, elegance and grace,” a tall, elderly man wearing a crisp red suit said. “In the middle is the head of the Pokemon Fan Club, Mr. Sukiso!” A short, dark-skinned, balding man smiled broadly. “What a remarkable day for a contest!” “And finally, on the left we have Pewter City’s very own Nurse Joy!” “Brock,” Forrest said quickly, “Look over there, two rows down and about a dozen seats along. Those are two of the men that have been patrolling the neighbourhood.” He was indicating two tall figures, both wearing a long dark coat. Brandon certainly got the impression of sneaking and espionage. “What are they after?” Brandon asked. “Well... if the pattern in the news was anything to go by,” replied Brock, “It would be me.” “What, why?!” “That’s what we’re here to find out.” Over the time they had been talking, the appeals round of the contest had begun. Their attention was caught just in time to see a well-groomed Ninetales execute a well controlled Fire Spin. Brandon was completely enthralled as the entrants (generally) improved over time. Among the better acts were, a ballet dancing Cherrim, a Skarmory performing aerial acrobatics among its Swift attack and, of course, the obligatory Milotic of almost every Pokemon contest around the globe. “And now please welcome to the stage entrant number twenty one, Stephanie!” An exceptionally beautiful girl with vivid, bubblegum pink hair walked out into the stadium. Her clothing was made of simple white satin and her hair was tied by a pair of sky blue ribbons. In Brandon’s mind (and also Brock’s it appeared) she was the epitome of elegance. “Riolu, it’s time to dance!” A short, navy blue and black wolf Pokemon that stood up on its hind legs materialised amid a cloud of lightning bolts. “Wow...” Brandon murmured, “What’s that Pokemon Dexter?” “Riolu, the emanation Pokemon, the aura that emanates from its body intensifies to alert others if it is afraid or sad.” “That’s such a cool Pokemon!” Stephanie began spinning on the spot. “Use Aura Sphere!” Riolu conjured several orbs of bright blue energy from between its palms and shot them around the arena. “No way!” Brock exclaimed, “A Riolu that can use Aura Sphere?!” “Now use Vacuum Wave.” The Pokemon jumped to an enormous height before spinning, to create a ripple of energy that collided with the suspending Aura Spheres causing them to burst into sparkling pricks of blue light. “Beautiful...” whispered Brandon. “Riolu, finish it up with Blaze Kick!” Its foot began to glow red before bursting into flame as Riolu hurtled towards the ground. The impact shook the foundations of the stadium and created large cracks in the floor from the power. The pair stood up and bowed to tumultuous applause. “That was amazing...” Brandon repeated for the fifth time, “Brock, what’s wrong?” “Riolu that can use Aura Sphere are extremely rare and powerful. Many cultures worshipped such Pokemon at some point in their history and even now they are sought after as trophies or tools of... war. I have a sneaking suspicion that those men are not just after me.” “That was an awe-inspiring performance from Stephanie and her incredible Riolu!” the Announcer shouted, “But what do our judges think?” “The synchronisation of the movements and timing of the attacks was absolutely flawless,” said Mr. Contesta. “Simply, remarkable!” Mr. Sukiso yelled. “Their artistic showmanship and passionate flare moved me deeply,” Nurse Joy replied. “Brock,” Forrest muttered quietly but urgently, “They are on the move.” The seats where the mysterious men had been were now empty. “Do you reckon we should go and warn that girl?” asked Brandon with a little too much zeal. “Yeah,” Brock replied.
They left their seats and marched in the direction of the dressing rooms. A piercing scream reached their ears as they neared their destination. Brandon, Brock and Forrest began running towards the source. They found Stephanie cowering under the gaze of three men wearing long black coats, accompanied by black dogs the size of small bears. The girl’s Riolu was frantically wrestling and struggling in one of the men’s iron grip. “Those are two Mightyena and a Houndoom!” Brock exclaimed, “Swampert, we need some help!” “Swampert!” “Monferno, help out Swampert! Absol it’s time for battle!” Brandon shouted, hurling a pokeball into the fray. “Monferno!” “Ab-sol!” Forrest also grabbed one of his pokeballs. “Rhyhorn, front and centre!” The enormous rhino let out an ear-splitting roar. “Hey you clowns, pick on a group your own size!” The commotion behind them caused the men to turn in mild surprise. “Well what do we have here boys? More cannon fodder for our new Pokemon?” The three chuckled to each other menacingly. “Let go of Riolu!” Brandon shouted. The men laughed loud and mockingly. “Why would we listen to the three of you? No Pokemon can stand up to the ones that we have here!” Reacting to the statement, the three dogs snarled, barked and bared their teeth. “Stephanie!” Brock called out past the thugs, “Give Riolu a command!” However, she didn’t react. If anything, she cowered further away at the thought of fighting back. “I guess it’s up to us!” Forrest said, “Rhyhorn, use Horn Drill!” The horn on the Pokemon’s head began to spin and whir like piece of mining machinery, as it charged at the enemy Houndoom. “Swampert, Hydro Pump!” Brock roared. Swampert loosed a super pressurised jet of water at one of the Mightyena. “Use Flame Wheel Monferno and Absol, Dark Pulse!” A stream of dark energy shot from Absol’s mouth, while Monferno curled up in to a circular inferno and launched at the other Mightyena. The brutes didn’t move a muscle, never mind flinching. “Mightyena, attack that Swampert with Leaf Storm!” The dog let out an ear-splitting howl, allowing a cascade of leaves to fly from its mouth and collide with a demoralised Swampert. “Houndoom, use Hydro Cannon.” Contradictory to its typing, the Houndoom released a powerful spurt of water at Rhyhorn, knocking it unconscious with one strike. The last goon smiled maliciously. “Mightyena, use Psychic!” The dog’s eyes glowed a sky blue, causing Monferno to be lifted up and thrown into the far wall. Absol, however, was safe thanks to a resistance to Psychic attacks. “Rhyhorn!” Forrest cried as he rushed over to his injured Pokemon, “How can your Pokemon use so many different attacks?! Their physical make up shouldn’t allow it!” Brock wasn’t paying attention to the fight anymore. The injuries that both Swampert and Monferno had received were serious, bordering on possibly fatal. “Stand strong Absol,” Brandon murmured. He knew there was only one attack that would work. The problem was that these men wouldn’t fall for it twice. “Sol...” “You should not have stood in our way! Houndoom and Mightyena use Giga Impact!” the middle thug roared. The three Pokemon became encased in spheres of indigo light before charging at Absol. “Wait for it...” Brandon thought, “Wait for it...” He darted forward around the back of the unfolding battle. “Use Me First Absol!” Absol glowed a bright white and attacked Houndoom with a full on body blow. Unfortunately, both Mightyena managed to avoid the attack just in time. Coming round the side of the thug holding Riolu, Brandon leapt high into the air and threw a mighty side kick at the man’s head. It landed perfectly, causing him to lose his grip and drop Riolu, who scampered away to cling to Stephanie. Brandon turned to see how Absol was faring and was distraught to find a pair of jaws wrapped around the throat of his closest friend. “Leave him alone!” Brandon cried, welling up with rage and desperation. “Snorlax, Hyper Beam on the ceiling!” A blast of vivid, orange energy impacted on the ceiling, causing great chunks of it to break off and land on top of the three gangsters, incapacitating them. Seeing their masters being overpowered caused the Mightyena to scamper away, yelping and crying. Houndoom was left behind, unconscious from Absol’s attack. “Is everyone alright?!” the same voice yelled. It came from a tall but obviously young boy with snowy white hair and rugged features. He wore a trendy, navy blue tracksuit with a black turtleneck. A titanic, fat, black and beige, humanoid figure was lumbering behind him. This was his Snorlax. “Stephanie, I came as soon as I heard the commotion!” “Dominic, those men, they attacked me and kidnapped Riolu!” Stephanie sobbed, “The three boys over there tried to stop them but the thugs’ Pokemon were two strong.” She curled back up into a ball and clutched Riolu tightly to her chest. “It’s alright, Officer Jenny and some other officers are on their way,” Dominic replied soothingly. He walked over to Brandon, Brock and Forrest. “I want to thank you for helping my girlfriend and her Pokemon, how can I make it up to you?” Brock turned to face the newcomer, his expression a mixture of fury and anxiety. “You can go get our Pokemon some help! Those attacks were ridiculously powerful!” Moments later, a swarm of officers, medical personnel and innocent bystanders had swarmed around the area of the attack. All the Pokemon involved in the battle, apart from Riolu and Snorlax, were too wounded to be carried out in their pokeballs. Five special trolleys with breathing apparatus had to be wheeled in while the police held back the crowd. The next few hours were spent answering Officer Jenny’s questions about the attack and waiting for a report from Nurse Joy on the condition of their team. Eventually, the red syringe light dimmed and she emerged from the ICU. “All of your personal Pokemon will be fine after a couple of days rest,” Nurse Joy said with a smile, “Monferno has a broken arm, Absol has some nasty bites on his neck and Swampert has a broken leg but luckily all the other wounds are superficial.” Brandon and Forrest were ecstatic, jumping up and down in celebration. Dominic smiled appreciatively and Stephanie whispered “That’s good.” However Brock remained grim. “You said our personal Pokemon are all ok,” he murmured quietly, “Is there something wrong with Houndoom?” Nurse Joy’s smile faded completely. “Follow me and I’ll explain.” The group wandered into the ICU to find Absol, Monferno, Swampert and Rhyhorn sleeping soundly. Houndoom on the other hand seemed to be in considerable distress. Its breathing was fast and laboured. It jerked and moved randomly, as though it had a full body twitch. “Its heart rate and blood pressure are twice as fast as they should be,” Nurse Joy said, indicating the monitor, “I couldn’t understand it so I took a sample of its bone marrow. Several dozen of the cells I observed did not fit into standard Houndoom physiology. No natural mutation could have caused such a change.” “That might explain why it was able to use water attacks,” Brock mused with a frown. All of a sudden, the machines surrounding Houndoom went into overdrive, beeping out of control. Its body thrashed around and jumped around as though it were in considerable pain. The beeps then became one continuous, long drone. “It’s dead...” whispered Stephanie, sobbing slightly. Officer Jenny looked determined. “Nurse Joy, can you continue to study that cell sample. It may help us understand something about these attacks.” “Of course!” “Wait!” Brandon and Dominic exclaimed almost in unison, “You mean there have been other attacks to this one?” “I am afraid that is police only business,” Jenny replied shortly, “We appreciate your help but we can’t have you becoming any more involved. Please return home and get some rest.” Brock, Stephanie and Forrest walked out silently, with Brandon and Dominic following close behind, grumbling to themselves.
