Agreed that the blade in his left hand looks stupid. I don't get why the blades look different. I guess it's because they technically represent two entities, but wasn't the entire point of Zangetsu and Hollow Ichigo that they were two sides of the same coin? Eh, maybe the Bankai form will have them look the same.

I REALLY hope for Bankai he puts them together and they become one sword again. It will be great symbolism and will remove the stupid short sword.

Because I was bored, earlier today, I decided to skim the current arc, save for the Kenpachi vs. some character I don't care about because I "read" that a while back.

Ichigo's encounter with Juha Bach really, really sucked. To compare with a superior shonen manga, in Fist of the North Star's final major arc, when Ken first encountered Kaioh, Kaioh showed us that he was more powerful than Raoh by beating Ken to a bloody pulp, beating the Muso Tensei (in an act of bad writing, when Ken used it, he just moved around really fast and didn't try to attack, unlike previous uses), squeezed blood from Ken's body like a lemon, then crucified him.

Here, Juha attacks Ichigo, Ichigo does some Quincy magic trick to avoid it, Juha reveals some stuff about Ichigo being a Quincy, and the generic right-hand man breaks Ichigo's sword in a generic "slash through so fast no one saw it" fashion. Then, time runs out and Juha tells him to get better. LAME.

Then, the story stops for a 10 issue-long "mom and dad meet" story. I emphasize 10 issues because my initial reaction upon seeing it's length made me think it really could've been shorter. All this backstory about the parents doesn't make me think of Ichigo's mother as anything more than the "stock loved one who dies to give the protagonist a motivation to do something righteous" she was introduced as. As for the length, a few panels with father character's narration could've told the relevant bits in less pages (possibly even shortening it to 2 issues,) saved a few trees, and continued the story sooner.

Then a couple issues about side characters I don't care about that I glazed over mostly. Why? Because I don't care about the Soul Reapers except that broad with massive hooters. BECAUSE she has massive hooters. And Kenpachi.

Then, Ichigo getting 2 new swords, continuing Ichigo's quest of getting new power-ups, because just getting new powers passes as a legitimate character arc, it seems. Considering how predictable the series is, this power-up isn't a big idea since he'll a new one and a power-up to embrace the Quincy powers to beat Juha Bach at the end anyway. Heck, Kubo didn't even put effort into making them, or the scene where Ichigo acquires them look awesome. His new sword will only be good enough to barely beat the "generals" or whatever they're called, so the stupid short sword will be gone by the final battle or when Ichigo fights that guy who broke his sword.

Also, when did Uryu get that Hitler comb-over? The time skip?

I think it's a great show of power to show that even the boss' lower could easily defeat you. I mean, doesn't it seem like a better way to show a boss' power than to have the boss actually have to raise a hand? Yeah, the boss didn't beat Ichigo to a bloody pulp to prove he's stronger, which would have been cooler, but who cares? It still proves an equally effective point to not even have to raise a hand against you to show you're stronger.

Ichigo's mom didn't die to have Ichigo do something righteous, Ichgio started the whole Shinigami thing because his sisters were in trouble and he wanted to save them. And I get that you wanted the story to hurry up and get on with itself, but hell, who cares that it took so many chapters? It was an interesting explanation for why Ichigo had quincy powers, why his mother died, and why his father didn't save her. It also gave us a nice backstory on Uryu's father and who Uryu's mother may be. And personally, those flash-back chapters flew by for me, maybe because I don't spend my time waiting for the next chapter.

What's the point of having so many characters if you're not going to ever show them except when the main character needs help? Many people love these side characters and want to see their life and struggles so that they become more than just "that one side-character". But i see that you only care if a character has big tits or is a complete badass. May I make a recommendation? Duke Nukem: Forever.

Well, it's a good thing Tite Kubo doesn't take story recommendations from you, because I like the way his new Zangetus was revealed. I think if you had it your way, Ichgio would've had the full-on magical girl cinematic with sparkles and stances.

The most personal of experiences tells me "that one side-character" who serves as oil for the cogs of the plot is a horrible thing and shouldn't be done. Like ever.

Are you saying that you shouldn't use side-characters as the one thing that can move the plot forward? If so, then I'd agree. But if you're saying that you shouldn't advance the personal story of side-characters, then I'd have to disagree.

I'm saying side-characters deserve some limelight and using them as convenient plot elements/devices/Deus Ex Machinas is horrible. Especially when they get shown up by a damn dog.

Uhh, no. If I had it my way, I would give at least some majesty when he got the new swords. Like, Metroid majesty.

Except bad guys who show up, do nothing, and leave aren't that threatening. And, in a long series with so many powerful villains that Ichigo has defeated, it's kind of important to establish how Juha Bach is raising the bar from Aizen and Ulquiorra. Walking away before doing any significant damage to Ichigo isn't raising the bar.

Yeah, showing up and *defeating the single *strongest shinigami captain in Soul Society, then standing there fearlessly as his subordinant swiftly deals with the main protagonist is totally just 'showing up and doing nothing'.

*'Defeating' sounds more like it implies a chance of the other fighter winning, which there wasn't.

*Strongest captain so far. We've been introduced to this new 0 Division so there could be stronger.

Unfortunately, with most shonen these days that's what happens. They get random power ups that the characters didn't work for. But I feel it was justified, being that it revealed some goodies about Ichigo's sword and Zangetsu and his inner hollow.
